Will's 1st preseason action

17 min, 6pts on 2-7 shooting and 0-2 from the arc. He also had 4 ast but the biggie was a team leading 3 steals. He also had a +/- of 1. Can someone please explain this stat to me and is it a legitimate measurement of success.

He had a rough night shooting but sounds like for other point-guard type things he played very well. They have to be pleased with the 4 assists and 3 steals in 17 minutes.

As for the plus minus thing, it sounds like there are two types of plus minus that get used. First one is the normal plus/minus which just says how the player did while he was on the court, which means that Cherry's team out scored the other team by 1 point while he was in the game. The other type is the adjusted plus minus which accounts for quite a few other things.

Thanx Potomac. Sounds like one of those stats for the stat heads that's got alot of hub-ub but not a whole lot of real meaning to it.

Excited for Will. I'm sure he had 1st game jitters shootin' but really showed what he could do defensivly. I see him having a good shot makin' the team as the third point just for his shut down ability.
 
+/- can be somewhat telling. Some of the more valuable players in the NBA that aren't scoring machines will have a high + average. A good example is Shane Battier. Never a superstar but someone just about every coach wants on their team. He does all the little things and that translates to the team outscoring the other team while he is on the floor. That said, I hate Duke and the Heat, so screw Battier.

Agreed, damn Steaming Dukies. Could care less about the Heat now that Lebrons gone. Don't matter anyway now that my Bulls are set to win it all.
 
rough preseason for both qvale and cherry.

i don't see qvale having much of a shot; he hasn't played in any of the preseason games, and there are two backup centers ahead of him, mismack byombo and cody zeller. both are younger, with more experiernce and probably more upside. it would take a major injury for qvale to make this roster.

will's situation is baffling. he didn't play the first game, then had a typical wil cherry game when he got in--poor shooting percentage, but four assists, three steals and only one turnover in 17 minutes. enough, i would think, to earn some more playing time--but then the next game, he doesn't see the court. i know too that the guy who covers the raptors for the toronto star is pushing for more height on the roster, to the exclusion of will.

both the hornets and the raptors play tonight, so we should know more soon. i still think will has a shot. he just has too much talent not to make it somewhere.
 
Qvale was one of six Hornets who did not play, but Cherry logged 14+ minutes in the Raptors' 81-76 win over the Knicks in NY.

Cherry had a rebound, a steal, an assist and 3 turnovers while scoring 3 (1-3, with one free throw).
 
Im pretty sure Qvale was brought in just to help with numbers during camp and pre season. They were injury prone and short on bodies.
 
Oct 15: Both Will Cherry and Brian Qvale got onto the court in their teams' preseason action tonight.

Cherry played 7 minutes in the Toronto Raptors' 92-89 win over the Boston Celtics. Cherry went 1-for-1 from the field and had one rebound.

Qvale played 3+ minutes in the Hornets' 104-84 loss to Detroit, going 0-for-1 from the field with no other recorded stat.

But Cherry's minutes came in the first half only. Hard to interpret what's going on there.
