Will the Griz play a 4-3-4 defense?

I thought TCU used this defense? UCF, Cincinnati, and obviously SDSU. Not the only ones though

Kansas State uses it...they also have All Conference and All American d-linemen. They have a very good defense.

The Griz have used it well for the most part, but may have to upgrade some personnel to use it to its full potential.
Impossible.

I've been told smart coaches like those from NDSU would never adopt a scheme like that and use it successfully.

Angle of pursuit was a huge issue against msu, banana curved half the time like they were misreading Mellott's speed.
I think this team can win, with this defense

Good point. I enjoy discussing football with posters who actually can provide knowledgeable points to the discussion. We may not agree, but it is much better than the constant pissing contest posts to Bobcat fans.

Agree, no need for an echo chamber! Lol. I'm worried about how bad they got us up the middle though, that wasn't angles that was getting blocked the hell outta the way

Yeah, I get it. Anyone can parade a bunch of FBS teams out who use the 3-3-5. But how many have made the final 4 to play for a national championship? My point is, if we expect to RTD like Hauck predicts, we should emulate the teams in both FBS and FCS who are perennial contenders for a national championship, not try to defend our use of a gimmick defense which became the new in-vogue defense for teams who can't recruit enough D-linemen and great LBs to dictate to the opposing offense, instead of trying confuse them with multiple blitz packages. During our years of dominance, we used to just line-up on defense and challenge the opponent to beat us. We used to recruit them, and still do with the LB group. But, it may be a recruiting issue with D-linemen. NDSU , JMU, and Sam Houston don't seem to have a problem recruiting them.
There is a reason why the top teams in both FBS and FCS don't use the 3-3-5. If you can't see that, then you are ignoring the obvious.

Anyway, I enjoy the discussion. Makes for a fun board in lieu of Griz/Bobcat pissing contests.

Hey! 2021 Cincinnati was pretty damn good!

Yep, they are the outlier. Good call. But, Google their new D-coordinator, and he only uses the 3-3-5 alignment about half the time. (he came in 2021, I believe)

I think a whole lot of our problems on defense as well as at QB and O-line, are recruiting issues. I think our recruiting the past few years has bee no better than middle of the pack in the big Sky, when we used to be #1 every year. Don't know why, but we need to fix it.

Until they played someone good.

Ha, fair, kinda. Lost to Bama but beat a ranked Notre Dame team and and a ranked Houston team. It's something dammit
I'm sure they would've won the natty if they had only had the sense to run a 4-3. Literally the only single, sole thing stopping them from beating Alabama and Georgia.

Well shit, lotta optimistic fans. I'm going to reserve judgement until this season ends, a glass half full is much tastier
