Will Jordan Johnson Keep His Scholarship?

I spoke with Kevin McRae of the Montana Board of Regents this afternoon. He says because Jordan Johnson has been accused but not yet convicted of a felony, he may remain a student in good standing at UM, but because of the more stringent Student Athlete Code of Conduct, he has already been removed from the team. But if he has already been expelled by the Honor Court, the expulsion upheld by the President, and he is appealing to the CHE, wouldn't the decision whether he can keep a scholarship depend on his status as a student at UM. Thus, the decision rests with the CHE. While I still believe (again just a guess) that the expulsion was not based on the criminal allegation (and certainly the criminal case was not dependent on the University action) but rather other allegations (which may have been related to the criminal allegation), it would seem unlikely that the CHE would overturn the findings of the Honor Court and President at this juncture.

However, I would agree that if the Honor Court had not reached its decision to expell, then he shouldn't lose his scholarship simply because of a criminal charge. Only after he reaches a plea agreement or he is convicted would the school be allowed to pull the scholarship.

He was a former member, but does not serve on the board. In his current position he heads the administrative agency that serves the Board (got that off the website, I really don't know much about it).
