Will Cherry's State Championship Game thread.

should be a good game. but the southern california teams, both boys and girls, have just been killing their northern california counterparts in the lower divisions. we'll see if mack can stand up for the bay area.

McClymonds is ranked #11 nationally by USA Today. Will Cherry is mentioned as team leader, team captain, and defensive stopper. He is expected to defend their top guard, heading to USC. Pretty encouraging for the future of GRIZ basketball.

Cherry is creating his own shots, primary ball handler, and one great ally oop pass, but it was missed by his teammate. Cherry already with 2 rebounds, and playing great defense.

They are using Cherry as the primary on the ball defender. He is very quick defensively. He keeps alot of balls alive with his jumping, quickness, and effort. He is splits ball handling with 2 other players.

end of 1 quarter, 10-4. Both teams playing in your face defense, and when there is a decent shot both teams are rattled. Cherry should have 9, but only got 1 inside bucket to fall, the other shots were well set up, just not falling though. His defense and hustle though are top notch.

McClymonds is getting dominated inside. Cherry is the only one going for every rebound, and has 3 or 4 boards in the 1st half. He has 3 points, and needs work on his ft shooting.

what evil force has struck grizville today? no sooner do the lady griz score ten in a half than mack goes for eleven the entire half, essentially blowing themselves out of this championship game. cherry's got the quicks and the hops, hustles, and seems a great kid, but he's not the factor in this game he's been in previous games. i think last year he had something like 17 points, 12 assists and a couple of steals in leading mack to the championship. not today. of course.

City, even without the big stats, I can see he has all the intangibles and athleticism. He seems to be near every rebound, getting his hand on the ball alot defensively, and no doubt a true "shutdown" defender. He is not getting any help from anyone, and the JR from Westchester is just shutting down the paint and rebounding. I cannot remember his name, but the kid looks to me a top level recruit next year.

Cherry's ally oop pass to Powell early in the game was sweet and right on the money. At least I think it was Powell. I am impressed by Cherry. I am hoping for a huge 2nd half for him and McClymonds.

PS: The big JR is Dwayne Pulley (sp?) what a great prospect.

End of 3, McClymonds cannot throw the ball in the ocean. Cherry is very talented with great attitude. They are down 36-21, lets see if he tries to take the game over now.

Damon Powell is a freak of an athlete, but very very inconsistent. I would be recruiting him hard for a midmajor player. If his game matures with his athleticism, he will be one hell of player. City, were they right? Is he only a JR?

I guess they were wrong earlier on Powell. They just now said McClymonds will miss Cherry, going to Montana, and Powell graduating, without mention of any school. Note to Wayne: offer this kid too or stay in contact with him if he goes JC.

BTW, McClymonds has 4 freshman playing supporting roles this year. So there are more recruits in the pipeline.

As for Cherry, I see him as PG for his defense, quicks, and leadership. His shot does looks solid, but inconistent at this stage. I see him as a starter or 1st guard off the bench next year, depending on what Wayne wants from his guard rotation. At least Wayne knows he has player that will play hard for 40 minutes, and play tenacious defense. Offensively, he creates shots well. Tonight they just did not fall.

Final Score: 49-31. Welcome to Montana Will!!!!!!!! Bring your attitude and defense to the GRIZ!

my analysis is, mack was the most athletic team in northern california this year, getting by on their athleticism and pressing trapping defense. but against an equally athletic team that had faced much tougher competition throughout the year, their weaknesses were exposed--especially their shooting. plus westchester displayed much better coaching.

will cherry will be a one-man defensive force next year but i still say he is not yet a true point guard. plus he's the kind of kid who has to force himself to step up and take command. throughout the year mack's coach has urged him to take more shots. his team was crying out for somebody to step up tonight and assume a leadership role, and i didn't feel he did that. but then maybe the way his team was shooting, nobody could have done that.

powell has issues. he's a junior who has exhausted his eligibility--don't know why-- but is petitioning for another year. the kid is a remarkable athlete, no question. but i've noticed that when the media wants to interview a team member it's always will cherry, not powell. and you could see from tonight that he lets his emotions get the best of him. in all respects, i don't know if he's college material or not.
