Why UConn is considering cutting some sports programs

"UConn won’t rule out eliminating some sports to close a more than $40 million gap in its athletic department budget."

"In an NCAA financial statement released Thursday, UConn reported that total generated revenue from sports last year totaled $40.4 million, while expenses came in at $80.9 million.

Football lost $8.7 million, men’s basketball $5 million and women’s basketball, a perennial power, had expenses more that outpaced revenues by more than $3 million.

The school reported receiving $7.1 million in conference distribution funds last year and another $1 million in media rights, down from $7.3 million reported in 2017. By comparison, the average school distribution for the Southeastern Conference was reported to be about $41 million and Big Ten schools reportedly received an average of about $38.5 million."

Saw that article. The numbers are just mind-boggling. Some of that is the cost of living (and therefore doing business) there. According to one web list I found, Connecticut is the fifth most expensive state to live/do business in. FYI: Hawaii is the highest, DC is second, California is third and New York in fourth. On that particular list, Montana is 18th ... not cheap, but way down from Connecticut.

Not sure how UConn can get its spending more in line with its revenue.
