Why recruiting stars mostly means nothing

For players that sign with the FCS, stars are nothing more than something for the fan base to brag about. BESIDES MSU's surprise signee, the dude who was going to grey shirt at Arizona State, show me DOCUMENTED proof of ONE player the Cats signed today that had legitimate, upper tier offers from an FBS school, I mean full rides from an FBS school that he turned down to attend MSU. And I'm not talking smack, I'm just using the Cats' class as an example because they did sign quite a few guys with stars attached to their name.

The point I'm trying to make is, at the FCS level, just because a guy has stars doesn't mean your program got one over on the FBS schools. I'm pretty sure, after watching ESPNU's signing day special all day, that Nick, Les, Jimbo and the boys aren't sitting around tonight lamenting about the two-star guy they didn't get that went to MSU or Cal Poly or EWU.

And again, I'm just using the Cats' 2014 class as an example. I never put much stock in the stars attached to Griz' recruits names, and I'm under no delusions that the Griz have gotten a bunch of guys who turned down legitimate FBS offers to play at UM. In fact, off the top of my head, Cody Balogh is the last guy I can even remember that turned down an actual full-ride FBS offer (Washington) to play at Montana.

You 're 2 for 2 tonight HavGriz. I don't know. Did Colt Anderson, Tim Hauck or Tru Johnson have any Rivals stars?

I thought Tru was a 3 star recruit. Dunno off the top of my head though. Everyone who actually scouted Tru knew he was underrated because he was listed as a WR out of High school.

Here's the Scout.com rating of UM's 2008 class. Trumaine Johnson was a 0-star wide receiver, and the gem of the recruiting class was 3-star Thomas Bauer. 10 guys were rated as 2-stars. There were a few misses, but that class was pretty solid.

Sorry, we all know the gem of that class was Mr. Kessman, what would we do without him?
