Why do the Cats chant...

I've always wondered why cat fans continue to do their cheer, "Eat $hit Grizzlies, Go-Cats-Go?" Maybe they can "BUY-out" the idea from NDSU president and be a little more classy

On a serious note, the litter box has always struck me as an odd place, the crowd cheering that in unison... why is it. Are they drunk? Jealous? Bored with losing? Other?

I've never witnessed it, but I have heard that they torch a stuffed teddy bear at one of the tailgates at each home game.

i have witnessed this. it happens during non-conference games, against D2 opponents...doesn't matter. its some kind of strange inferiority complex would be my guess. a few years ago they cleverly augmented the chant to: "eat sh!t grizzlies, no means no." the Bobcat fan is a strange and desperate breed.

Actually they hang it from a noose, cut its throat then torch it. Usually they put a kids #37 jersey on it as well.

Just part of the rivalry I guess. I've also heard many Griz fans chanting, "FTC" at various bars, and tailgates at WGS. Doesn't really bother me, but they do have a little extra anger and pep in their voices when they do that chant. I can't really blame them-if we had to go through what they have the past 30 years we might be a little more bitter and frustrated too. Its ALWAYS a good day to be a Griz!

Go Griz!

Wow, how primal. You would think they could just walk it out to the middle of a field and blow it away with a hand gun.

Go Griz!

Pretty sure those are either Business or Law School grads. They can get pretty worked up about the Federal Trade Commission.

Caught a real lol there!!

cat fans talk about what they want the Griz to eat so we'll drop to their level....

So FTC... if you think could stand to do that beastiality...

... not to mention that "cat in heat, scratchy at the sky, cat scream" (reeeer!...reeeer!...reear!) they play on the PA and act out in unison after big plays....apparently not too many "sky scratch fever" moves this year so far....

I am a business school grad and we really appreciate the rather 'accommodating' approach Chairwomen Edith Ramirez has taken. Definitely worthy of a chant or two.

I too am a UM business school grad and miss the point of this comment:

Can someone enlighten me?

Before the 2009 Cat-Griz game, I actually happened to walk by the burning of the teddy bear thing, just by accident actually. At the time, I laughed and thought it was pretty funny and clever. However, I did not know that guy or family, does it for every single MSU home game and not just when they're playing the Griz. From that point on, any talk from MSU fans about Griz fans being obsessed with the Cats was rendered moot. That guy is OBSESSED with the Griz, and, in the years since, I've heard it's become such a big deal, he doesn't even have to buy the toy bears anymore. Other MSU fans donate them to him because they love it so much.

I know the guys that do that "tradition". They are good guys and die hard Cat fans. My 7 year old grandson saw them do it about 3 years ago and couldn't quit talking about what they did to Monte. I asked the main instigator about it and he said they just love the rivalry and having fun with it. I told them they were way to obsessed with the Griz and they were just another game for us. We don't bother with any tradition regarding the Cats other than beating them.

Well when you can't win on the field, guess you have to find other ways to beat the Griz. Maybe it's comforting, makes them feel good, really have no idea why they do it every game, year after year. Very intelligent. In my opinion, its very childish, I've seen it, had a Cat friend take me over when they were doing it, wasn't impressed at all. Grow up.

Its a fact that humans are ritual driven: birthdays, anniversaries, births, deaths, (etc.) are all marked by various kinds of rituals. They play a strong role in helping people mark the passage of time so it doesn't all blur together. In the case of Bobcat fans, by the end of the game their vision is so blurry from the steady flow of tears that if they didn't have their ritual to rely on then one ass-kicking would be virtually indistinguishable from all the rest. You wouldn't want that for them now would you?
