Frisco working to keep FCS title game past 2015 season
North Dakota State will usher in the college football season Saturday, making a trip to fellow national power Montana for the FCS Kickoff.

While the school's opening matchup always changes, everybody knows where NDSU has been on the final day of the season the last four years - in Frisco, Texas, where the Bison have captured a record number of consecutive national titles.

Just as NDSU hopes to again be in Texas to end the 2015 FCS campaign, Frisco hopes to continue serving as a co-host of the championship game after it is played at Toyota Stadium on Jan. 9, which marks the end of a second three-year contract with the NCAA.

The title game has been an economic success in Frisco, with NDSU's strong fan base becoming a central part of it. Frisco, which has served as co-host with the Southland Conference and the Hunt Sports Group, is negotiating with the NCAA to continue that winning relationship.

"They've done a phenomenal job," NDSU coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday. "We've been blessed to be down there four years in a row. Unbelievable welcomes, unbelievable hospitality, great people down there, everybody's friendly, they bend over backwards to help you. The game-day atmosphere has been phenomenal."

Particularly of note is the fact that the game could again become a Friday Night Lights affair in Texas.

The prevailing thought in football circles is NFL owners will vote to expand the playoffs from 12 to 14 teams in the near future. ESPN has been careful not to broadcast the FCS championship game against the NFL playoffs, but if the NFL's first round increases from four games to six, then ESPN could move up the FCS game from a Saturday afternoon to a Friday night.

The first championship game to be played in Frisco, won by Eastern Washington to cap the 2010 season, was played on a Friday night. The last four, all won by NDSU, have been held on Saturday afternoon.
No surprise that the FCS Championship would suck hind tit to pretty much any NFL playoff game.

But aside from that ... Anybody hear anything about some other place competing to host the game?

Chatty rocked. Never should have moved it from there.

No idea who may also be considering a bid. I hope whomever it is that they have a nice cricket field to play the title game on. That should give the selection committee a real difficult decision between pizza pie park's soccer field.

They should do it at the Allen, TX high school stadium.

Perspective.

Frisco is a good spot. Town embraces the game, well attended (thanks ndsu) and close to a major airport.

Love the Friday night game, that's when Eastern played in it, but it's the same night as the cotton bowl.

Never been to Chattanooga but it's been a big success in Frisco...

Chatty isn't easy getting to from the west. Fly to ATL, drive. I've never been round it during the dayytime but night reminds me of east jr high area in Butte. Okay, but the kids aren't wandering off. Then the SEC. Fans always show up drunk and yelling about our D2 league....so yeah..Frisco seems a little more central for all, at least

The proposal Frisco will be presenting with their bid will blow all other locations out of the water. I can assure you that Frisco thinks so highly of this privelage and they view it as an extreme privelage to host. Can't give details but I would be shocked if it's moved from that community any time soon. Also it's sickening there's bizon shit in bars all over down here.

My two bits...been to Frisco several times not for the game but for business. Frisco does offer great air access from around the nation via DFW. Also being in suburban Dallas there are thousands of nearby hotel rooms. Yet on the other hand, Frisco isn't exactly a compelling tourist destination and the soccer stadium is only a so-so venue for a championship.

The full house attendance is a direct function of No Dakota State making the game. They have a fervent fan base, and are glad to be in Texas during January rather than home in No Dak. Previous games (without the "Snorties") were not nearly as well attended so I wouldn't attribute any attendance edge to Frisco over other locales.

Marshall University had a wonderful stadium but the town isn't compelling, nor easy to reach. Chattanooga is a cool town, has a decent stadium, and the city loved hosting the teams. So other than air access I'd easily give them the nod over Frisco if it came down to those two.

Yet what would be great is to get the game played in San Diego, Las Vegas, New Orleans, or another southern location with a major airport and some diversions in addition to the game. That would be an attractive package for a January trip and help boost attendance regardless of who is playing. :ugeek:

Las Vegas is damn cold in January...now San Diego would be great...but, East Coast and Southern schools would hate that. Maybe, alternate "coasts" every 2 years would be ok....

There's only been one game in Frisco that didn't include the Snorties and that was with EWU. So yeah, I'm sure their nine fans were there but no way they're filling the stadium up.

Agreed, Vegas can be damn cold in January yet so can Dallas. In either case it would likely be as warm, or warmer, than wherever the participating schools are located. Weather wise, and other factors, San Diego is a perfect place to hold a championship. The downside is SAN is located as far away from every participating school as possible, and typically it doesn't necessarily have compelling air fares.

I threw Vegas into my mix for two important reasons. I honesty believe it could be a great location for this game. First there is the recreational attraction beyond just attending a game. That should help solidify those considering attending. Second, Las Vegas has great (and usually inexpensive) air service from virtually anywhere in the country. Beyond that Vegas obviously has the infrastructure for hosting (facility & rooms) and I believe they traditionally have a fall off in business right after New Years so the timing might be right for them to pursue an annual event.
