It's the beginning of a long offseason of FCS Football, and there has been 12 posts & 1200 views today about some guy named Ethan Bateman a (walk on) who didn't go to class.

Griz are in the running for a big sky title & possible NCAA bid in the middle of hoops season (with a huge win over Long Beach St. Who is going to be seeded very high in they NCAA's) & there hasn't been a post in hoops forum for 8 hrs, what the F is wrong with guys......

For the immediate future anyway, football is going to be THE sport at UM, no matter what the season is. That's just how it is.

We just must suck as BB Fans!

Many people excited about this griz basketball season, and i think you'll find that on:

Montana Grizzlies Basketball
Talk about Grizzly Basketball and related Big Sky Hoops. (All other hoops discussions take to the sports forum)
Maybe there's a CAT basketball thread you should be on, instead of this one. You must be proud of all of their recent success.

Probably been two weeks since someone has posted there; but then if you really cared about that, you wouldn't be on a Griz web site...would you?

Sorry dude, you can't understand unless you're a Griz fan. :)

That Long Beach win IS huge for the Griz. Last I looked, their RPI was hanging around 35 or so. It's not often the Griz beat a team in the Top 50. That will look pretty damn sweet to the selection committee. Weber's RPI is around 90, so when the Griz beat them, that will be two wins vs. Top 100 teams.

However, Weber's strength of schedule is awful at 275. Their best win is Montana (RPI 106). Their best out of conference win was Utah State at 147.

The Long Beach State win definitely was a big one for the Griz.

That was the same Long Beach State team who beat Pitt @Pitt by 10 shortly before the Griz beat them, has hung with North Carolina and Kansas, and beat Xavier (ranked). LBSU is also 10-0 in their conference now.

Great win for the Griz. Hope more people start paying attention to this BB team. They are a hell of a lot of fun to watch. 10-1 in conference right now and just 3 games away from yet another 20 win season.

It's interesting how the pendulum has turned from the days when I was at UM. Basketball was king then. (A fella by the name of Micheal Ray had a little bit to do with that.) I avidly attended almost every Griz sporting event and still have a warm place in my heart for Dornblaser, but the basketball games had the higher level of craziness and indescribable Griz aura.

It is because, at the FCS level, Montana is a national powerhouse and it is fun to talk about the new players that will keep Montana fighting for a national championship. The B-Ball team, while having a good year, competes at the level with North Carolina, Duke, etc and all anyone can hope for is a birth in the dance and the chance to not lose by much in the first round. Montana is not on the national map in basketball so interest is low. However, the men have been getting decent crowds at the games :thumb: Something like 3400 at Monday's game.

I was fairly young, but have vivid memories of the "zoo" being absolutely bonkers. Witnessed my first game in my mother's womb.

Plus, Fat Dad was the shit...favorite memory was against Reno in Big Sky Championship game in 1992. Not sure if it was the NCAA or the BSC, but they wouldn't allow him to belt out the names of Griz players the way he usually did. We win in a tight game...Fat Dad forced to be subdued the entire game. When he announced Delvon Anderson (still probably my favorite player) as the MVP of the tournament, he may have given the call of his career....hair stands on the back of my neck thinking about it.

Sidenote-What was the name of the shithead center for the Wolfpack that year? I do recall him catching a lot of grief in that game.

Was that Ric Herrin?

And yes, Fat Dad was the greatest. Any Griz fans who are less than 35 just cannot imagine what Dahlberg was like in the days of the mid 80s and early 90s. Imagine the NEZ, but then imagine how fired up you'd be after having to wait in line at the door for 4 hours, just to get into the arena 2 hours before tipoff. People think the NEZ is crazy now (and as a resident, I can assure you it is), but it can't hold a candle to the Zoo in the mid 80s, particularly when Idaho or Weber came to town.

My grandmother was a diehard Cat fan but she used to tell me she had a special fondness in her heart for the Zoo after they rolled potatoes onto the floor for the Idaho game.

I was there in the late 80s to early 90s. Great times in the basketball arena. Had to get there way early just to get in the zoo. Even on a school night. The ESPN game at the start of dessert storm was nuts! Protesters being dragged from the floor. Good thing the cops got them before the zoo took care of them. I still think that the school has done a disserviced to both basketball programs by moving the students. I know they have given them a chance here and there to show their support, but I believe if you put the zoo back permanantly, you would gradually get that support back. my 2 pennies for you.

I remember some brute force being used on the protesters..That situation was surreal.

Yes, the Zoo needs to be reinstated by putting the students on the floor. One problem (along with limited student attendance now) is the move to semesters. That long winter break leaves a lot of empty court-side seats.

2506,

I doubt there's any Griz fan that's not excited about the BB team. I know I am. I just think that football has become the predominate sport at Montana. If you mention the U of M inside and especially outside of Montana people say - Great Football program. I know this cause I don't live in Montana. When somebody sees my Griz gear, they aways say something about the football program.

Example:
When you're Alabama - it's football (I doubt there was a whole lot of talk about their BB team beating Auburn last night.) When they play football it's civil war inside the state.

When you're Kentucky, I doubt a whole lot is said about how crappy their football team was. It always is.

Go Griz!

Nothing will ever compare to the student section in bball in the 80's and 90's. I agree that schools are usually known for bball or football but I think it is weird that we switched completely as a town in thirty years.
