What do we REALLY know about the Griz?

That’s just it, we really don’t know much about our team after the Monmouth game unless of course they either lose or blow them out. Should UM lose this game, I think that they’re not a playoff caliber team. No playoff caliber team should lose to the likes of Monmouth. If they blow them out, say a score like 51-14, I’d say montana is in business in regard to playoffs.

Il tell you why, because we’ve been here before. Griz start the season looking like world beaters and proceed to lay an egg! Il believe they’re back and “good” when they’re in the playoffs again.

They seem to have some overly sensitive fans that post on eGriz, especially when some posts aren't all rainbows and unicorns. Team looks pretty good though, curious to see how they look against the current top dogs.
 
I know after 3 games last year we had given up 50 2nd half points, defense, special teams, from turnovers. Whatever, it was 50 points.

We have given up 21 this year, including a decent FBS team in their house.

Through all 2018 games we gave up an average of just over 15 points in the last 2 quarters of each game.

Ya, ya, small sampling so far this year but considering the Ducks were thrown into the equation I think that's encouraging.

Better O line, more depth on D, more experienced QB. I feel confident calling this a better team even this early in the season.

I think most people would concede that this year's team is better than last – as proven by the numbers. And, while it's "only" three games, that's still a quarter of the regular season ... at least a decent sample size.

The questions still to be settled are: (1) How much better? (2) Enough better to make the playoffs?

Be nice to win the Big Sky, but with the unbalanced schedules giving some teams an easier path (far easier than the Griz), that may not be realistic (maybe a co-champion?).
 
I'm going to wait to pass judgment until we see some stops on 3rd and forever.
Then we will know if they are better or not .
 
Compared to last year?
QB: better (experience level)
O line: better. Much better
D line: as good or better
LBs: as good or better
Receivers: better
Secondary: better
Specialist: as good.

Much better than the last couple of years! Yeah, we still have a lot to prove as the season goes on. Everything Butte Grizzle said plus: We've learned to make second half adjustments; we're finally finishing games, and learning how to win-only given up 41 points in the second half this year, including 7 to Oregon; and we're relearning how to win. If you can't see the difference, you're being overly critical. I see us losing, maybe two games the rest of the year, and wouldn't be surprised if we won out. I also can see why some Griz fans are skeptical after the last few years. this team, though, does seem to be playing with that swagger that hasn't been around for a while. Gp Griz!!!!
 
They seem improved, but I agree with the overall theme of this thread, it's still hard to say how much. If they win by a good margin today and beat Davis on the road next week I'll feel a lot better. Personally I'm still guessing 8-4 for the regular season and a playoff appearance.
 
All I know is that the offense is better & defense is light years ahead of where I thought they’d be. Bout the only real measuring stick available, in terms of related BSC teams, is UNA went in and beat WIU while the scats had a bit of trouble with them. Granted, a couple TDs were called back on stupid mistakes. But hey, the Griz hung 60 on a team that gave WIU a game who gave the neighbors a somewhat of a game. Are we way better than last year? I think so. Pass protection has looked better, WR core is way better, the DL has gotten pressure at times, passing defense has really stepped it up... This Griz team is way better than last year’s team. And lets be honest here, we may not know who the Griz are for another month. Today is gonna be a thrashing, I’m not sold on UC-D beings they got into a shoot out with USD. Yeah yeah, USD beat Cal Poly in 2016... 3 years ago on a field that had 3 inches of standing water on it because of monsoonal moisture from a storm that hit Mexico if I recall correctly. They haven’t done much in quite some time. I believe they have quite a few upperclassmen in the squad (USD) but c’mon. All non scholly kids who got overlooked. And Davis barely, BARELY beat them??? Look up the final play of the game if you haven’t saw it. Doss is gone at UC-D. Maier is good but is now limited. It will likely be considered a quality win. Then is ISU. Which has no compass on them at all. They’re scoring 0 ppg, and giving up 31. Only game they’ve played was against Utah in a 31-0 loss. Sac State... Hmm hmm hmmm. They beat an NAIA SOU 77-19. Held their own against UAZ in a 19-7 loss. Throttle a shitty UNCo team 50-0. The problem with all this is, we don’t even know who the entire conference is. Ewho looks rough, Weber is solid but are currently 1-2 after dropping two close FBS games but handled CP in a 41-24 win. Take note that CP sucks this year tho. PSU doesn’t look very good. Neither does NAU but they’ve got 2 road wins against lame opponents. Managed 41 points against AZ who stuck 65 on them. It’s an odd start to the season.

Finally, a game that didn’t go according to “script”. Lots of people had this game in the loss column this year (myself included) given the way last year’s game against UCD went and given the difficulty of our schedule this year.

Guess we know a bit more about our team now, eh? Just destroyed a team that took 4-1 PAC-12 Cal to the wire in Berkeley and that should have beaten NDSU if not for a couple late INT’s.

No silly penalties, no extracurricular on field activity, a minimum of jawing after the plays, just workman-like effort. That coupled with talent and intelligence resulted in utter domination. No, not a perfect game but pretty darn close.

Agreed...about as good a game (in all phases) the Griz have played in quite some time, especially given the level of competition.
 
I learned a quite a bit about Sneed. The first two drives were out of sync. Akem forgot to turn and look for the ball - Dalton was visibly upset with him. Sneed started to get agitated and on Twitter next series he was firing the ball to hard for his receivers to catch. Somewhere at the end of Q1 Dalton seemed to pull his guys together and started to lead his team. That was critical for me because he had some issues with letting cracks break the dam in the past. This game he didn’t let things get away from him. He was humbled and proceeded to lift the team up and carry the offense on a scoring run.
