What do transfer QB’s look for?

Sport

Well-known member
I readily have to admit up front. I’ve hardly ever played the game so I’m counting on the board members to enlighten me.
When an FBS QB looks to transfer what criteria do they use to evaluate their move?
Trying to put myself in their shoes my guess is they would want to;
1). Want to stay FBS
2). Want to start right away
3). Look for a system that suits there style
4). A program that has national exposure
5). A program that has a winning tradition
6). Strong fan support
7). If he’s primarily a passing QB what sort of line protection can he expect
8). If he’s more suited to run first same criteria applies
9). Culture of the program
10). Staff that will help him improve his skills
I’m sure there are more reasons but like I said, I hardly ever played the game.

Having a great chance to start is usually priority for transfers.

Also the receivers, I'm sure they would love to have receivers that come down with the ball more often than not. Gotta have those guys that can make incredible plays on 50 50 balls.

The succes of the program, for sure. They want to compete with the best. Doesn't look good if you lead a team to 4 wins. All sorts of things go into it. Like what degree they want etc. You could write a book about what they look for.

Great comment. I think OP has a good list, but there are so many things…closer to home, closer to girlfriend, money, following a coach…I mean there are tons.

10). Isn't really a thing. Anybody who isn't guaranteed the starters spot and thinks they're going to wait their turn in the "development" process, gets what they deserve.

My take is that any QB in the portal, after all of the big-time QBs sign with other FBS teams, will look ONLY for a starting position if he signs with an FBS school. Will go as far to say that he might expect a guarantee to start. I don't buy the popular narrative that coaches use that the QB position is open going into spring practice. Ask Gresch Jensen if Bobby had an open QB race going into that spring after Sneed was signed.

Jensen was butt hurt that Stitt was fired and that he was not handed the starting job and had to compete with Sneed. Path of least resistance was to follow his mentor down their paths of post-Montana failures.

Jensen Butt - Hurt? Far from it... an All-American freshman QB smart enough to see an incompetent OC and a narcissistic head coach who have failed to win a national championship, big sky championship, and have lost to the cats embarrassing 3 out of the last 4 years
since they have returned................. RTD ??? Whatever.... put these dinosaurs out to pasture and get some new blood in this UM coaching staff...

Jensen and his superior narcissistic OC did what after they left Montana to make his point? Jensen couldn't carry Sneed's jock.

Yeah. Freshmen all-Americans grow on trees, apparently. Who needs ‘em, right?

Someone wiser than I once said, "It's not how you start, it's how you finish." Doin' fine at Amazon these days.

OK, don't answer the question. Understandable.
