Western Washington exhibition

Just home.

Let me add, support this team and attend games.
It looks to me, they're committed to a fast pace on both ends. Taking the air out of the ball for most of a game is a thing of the past. The coaches seem very comfortable with that too.

Moody is the key player. Him staying healthy is huge!

Sounds like a really good kickoff for the upcoming season. I have a feeling that this is going to be a really good year for BSC basketball. See you in late December. I'll let you know how our exhibition game with Adams State goes. It happens on Nov. 2nd. :thumb:

Actually, I've watched a few work outs over the summer and a few practices this fall, along with one full scrimmage with refs. Dillon Jones has improved his body, his leaping, and his shooting. He will be a load for everybody we play. Alex Tew is going to surprise a lot of people. He has buffed up and is playing more aggressively. He is hitting a good percentage of his 3 point shots now and may play some at the 4 spot. Tamba has put on about 25 lbs of muscle, although, with his frame, it's hard to tell. His coordination is catching up with his body. Steven Verplancken is his usual self. In the scrimmage, he shot about 7 times and only missed once. Blaze Threat shoots over 41% from 3, just like Moody, and is a fierce competitor, just like Moody. He is a big addition to our team. All of the new freshmen are knock down shooters and playmakers. However, it may be hard to find minutes on this team. Of them, Marko Sarenac, a 6'11'' PF/C, has a good chance of getting minutes. He has a really good stroke from 3, is athletic, and has a fairly complete skill set for a freshman. Chris Dockery, a 6'6'' G/F, is the best athlete on the team and has shown that it will be hard to keep him off the floor for long. He made one block where his head must have been close to hitting the rim and then he took it the other way and made a great spin move to the basket. PT for him, Viliame Vartiainen, and Nemanja Sarenac will be spotty, as they will be playing behind Jones and Verplancken. Another one who has improved a lot, but may see only spot minutes is Louie Jordan, a 6'9'' G/F. In the scrimmage, he hit a couple of really nice 3s, played some good D, and rebounded well. Our transfer from Maryland, 6'10'' Arnouh Revaz, broke his wrist earlier in fall practice and will get his cast off in a week or two. When I saw him in the summer, he looked skilled around the basket and athletic, although he was out of shape at the time. The coaches tell me that he is the most offensively skilled player we have, within 10 ft of the basket. We won't see him against real competition until late November. My guess is that he will be in the rotation at center by the time BSC play starts.

I can hardly wait.

Good for you, Oldrunner. You've got a long glorious tradition at Weber, going all the way back to Allen Holmes, the father of Byron Scott, later of NBA playing and coaching fame, followed by chapter and verse of players who've given Montana fits through many decades: Willie Sojurner, Justus Thigpen, Bruce Collins and Harold Arceneaux, before we even get to the great Damian Lillard and Joel Bolomboy. Dillon Jones was a potential second-round NBA draftee last year, meaning he was considered among the top 60 players in the country, and should be better this year. I take your word that he'll be a load for any Big Sky foe this year.

Glad you can hardly wait!

Sadly, our fans can. Montana is now a full-fledged football school. A player can develop a hangnail on his pinky finger and it will be the subject six pages of posts on the Board.

But let us open the season with a scrimmage and an exhibition game, and there are no official stats or write-ups on GoGriz, and only a few sketchy reports from the one fan with a low battery on his cell phone who made it to the scrimmage. Full bio's on the new players were only recently posted, the while our coaching staff holds everything as close to the vest as poker players wearing shades on ESPN. A press conference? A Midnight Madness event? Even a box score, for God's sake, of a goddamned EXHIBITION game? Are you daft?

I've always said, any sports franchise depends on three things: A League, with coaches and an administration to run things; Players, to attract attention and provide athletic feats beyond the normal person's abilities; and Fans, to provide the noise and the bucks without which the League and the Players would not exist.

Our basketball program has a solid Coaching Staff, and after a few years of grave mishaps on the recruiting trail, they may also have the Players.

But the attitude toward the Fans is basically, F.U. We don't see you, hear you or care about you. It's not fair to blame them completely for the plummeting attendance at Griz basketball games because attendance at many schools has been on the decline for years, including at the fabulous Power-Five Purple Palace.

But nor is out of bounds to point out that the once-proud tradition and enthusiasm that defined the Montana Men's Basketball program has been substantially impaired by the callousness of this Administration and this Coaching Staff. I hope they never seek degrees in Marketing because they've already flunked out of 101.

I won't dispute your points. There's legitimate merit to your points. I don't know the answers, but I'll take a shot.
Maybe, they've chosen to use more time, efforts, and focus on bettering themselves and the team, due to questionable results the last few years.

I can only speak for myself, I saw a lot of positive changes from the staff, style of play, and returning player physical improvements.

Examples:
Thomas is firmer, slimmer, and quicker. He also is willingly scoring in the paint, with an improved array of moves.
Nap, is also more slender, quicker, better footwork, and surprisingly more athletic.
Whitney, isn't as bulky and quicker. His perimeter shot in warm-ups looked smoother.
Oke has the look of an athlete and looking to be a physical presence offensively and defensively.
Vasquez has put on muscle and some bulk. He's still on the slender side, but definitely looks stronger. He'll be back soon from injury.

What about the newbies? Let's just say, each of them are filling legit voids from player loss or things we lacked last year. Money, Giordan, Henderson, Tejon, Blake, and Zack all capable of being 2 way contributors. I'm guessing Zack will redshirt this year. If Money and Henderson stay, those 2 just may evolve like Rorie and Oguine did. Money has something special about him.

Maybe, the best PR is word of mouth? I'm certainly willing to do my part, if they continue delivering this product.

Thnx, GrizRule. I count you among the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable posters on this Board. I always find your comments incisive.

But you shouldn't have to be a one-man PR machine, or deliver the results of an exhibition game. Hell, we don't even have a box score.

These are no insignifcant gestures.

Maybe, they're trying to keep the mystery and unknowns that way. You know, curiosity might draw fans. Sometimes online technology takes away from actually attending.

I'll tell you this. The offense was well executed. They shot the ball well. They passed well. A lot of 3's. There was a lot sneaker squeaks. That's the best sound in basketball defensively. Oh, they came out with attitude and focus. They maintained it until the final 6 minutes, when the bench was cleared. Those boys played hard too. The execution was a little rough though.

I completely agree that the box score should be easier to find and we need more coverage of Griz basketball. That said, I was able to follow the box score live through the Griz app.

There's a superb game photo gallery up on GoGriz.com: https://gogriz.com/galleries/mens-basketball/mbb-vs-western-washington-10-21-22-/4489
I assume there's no recap or box because this was not considered a 2023-24 regular schedule contest.

Weber's exhibition with Adams State will not be on ESPN+. There will be live stats from our web site and there should be an article and box score on the web site the next day. It's open and free to the public. If they didn't poduce an article and box score, I feel that there would be many who would object.

There is a less formal scrimmage against some other team that is never publicized. I've only been able to sneak in on those a couple of times over the years. They don't publish anything on those. They are usually against some good D1 opponents. It's been BSU a couple of times, UVU a couple of times, an I believe UNM. I thinki that most of those teams contract with us on the basis that it will not be published. They run it as some sort of hybrid between an intersquad scrimmage and a real game. Niether team wants to set it up as a win/loss scenario. The public is not informed that it is going to happen, it is not open to the public, and there is no news release on it. I usually hear something about it from the coaches after it has happened, but no specifics. I think I may hear something about it next week.

Is there a way to copy and paste a link to the box score here? I am old and don't do apps!

I just checked and it doesn't look like it. The only way to do it would be if somebody screen-shoot and then uploaded to an image hosting site, then linked on here...and I'm not going to that trouble.

* Edit, I also checked Western Washingtons site and nothing there either....so, not just the Griz who don't keep close track of stats during exhibition games.

Montana Kaiman had a reporter there and they wrote about the game. Quick blurb from the article:

Montana unofficially started its basketball season with a 99-68 win against Division II Western Washington University Vikings in front of a crowd out to support a young Montanan fighting brain cancer.

UM had a light but dedicated crowd in its first game against the Vikings. The Grizzlies held the exhibition night to support 12-year-old Great Falls resident Wyatt Grove. Grove has been battling brain cancer since he was 7 and this game’s online sales all went to Grove, who was named an honorary member of the Montana Grizzlies last year.
