Well Griz it appears MWC may be going very big

A 16 team FCS playoff bracket with teams like Chadron St, Dixie St, Prairie View, Coastal Carolina, San Diego, Monmouth, Robert Morris, UT Martin, VMI, SE Lousiana, Norfolk St, Drake, Fordham, Dayton and Montana State and Marist..........is better than any Alabama/LSU, USC/Oklahoma bowl game.

So what you are saying is you are a proponet of Montana moving down if they have to.

The college football landscape is getting totally stupid. Why don't they get rid of conferences and just have it one big pot? Makes about as much sense.... :?:

For those people decrying the end of playoffs if we moved to this conference I would point out that this MWC/CUSA conference is not only instituting a conference championship game but conference semifinal games as well. That sounds like playoffs, and if they expand to 30+ teams they will probably add more rounds. With the BCS talking about a +1 system playoffs, or something like playoffs, at the FBS level isn't far off.

Actually the Arizona president has proposed an 8 team playoff with the MWC champion getting a slot. The momentum is building for a FBS playoff of some type and will happen no later then 2014. How many get in is yet to be determined and I suspect part of the reason behind this Merger.

Plan accordingly

So if the playoff reason goes away, and I think it will, then what? Waiting will probably ensure there are no spots yet, however if you tried to move up now the playoff might not happen. Tough call

Actually Griz4life they are talking very regional competition with no cross country travel in any sport. Western teams will stay west until the Championship games and tournaments. They are also saying there will be few to no mid week games and if there are a few only if the individual school agrees to it. ESPN is not involved it appears but rather FOX, CBS, and NBC (versus) Yes all the teams left that are not in the top 6 are locking up all remaining FBS football TV rights to get as much TV cash as they can. Your statement is opposite of the interview.

In the West the only two conferences will be the PAC and the MWCUSA western division. Nothing else will remain if this pans out over the next couple of years.

I don't think it's the opposite at all. Sure, they can promise fans that there will be no midweek games, but with the caveat "only if the individual school agrees to it," they're assuring you midweek games will be part of the package. Not every team will have one every week, that would be a killer for regular attendance. But if two teams agree to a midweek tilt every week of the regular season, you have ample games for midweek football, which is the realm of non BCS teams and BCS teams with little chance of sniffing a national title. All the other games can be regional and cheap. But why would you broadcast a game featuring two midwestern teams when you could, once a week feature a team from out west versus a team from the midwest or inland west? Tulsa v. Nevada is going you get you more casual viewers than Tulsa v. SMU.

Given time, this emerging era of not just big but humongous conferences of 24, 30...32 members,
some stretching from coast to coast will suck all of the air out of college football options for marginal players. It will leave behind the dregs of D-1 football to find any kind of decent affiliation. Sooner or later UM will have to decide if it went to the dance just to listen to the music or if it's going to shake a leg and get on the floor while it still can. Lesser more proactive programs that elect to move on will contribute to the oxygen deficit. The BSC will be far from immune. Don't expect ROOT or any other TV sports provider to be enthused about a gutted conference populated only by the unwanted and the uncommitted. :twocents:

Hopefully the timid approach by UMs president towards WAC or even upward movement at all will not prevent the University of Montana from having a seat at a MWC/WAC/West whatever conference name is seat in the future. Increased revenues to offset increased costs, peer institututions, more national exposure not just for sports but academics as well.

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

This is the middle tier of schools so many griz fans have said they want to join when the big boys break away. They are not coming back to FCS. They are staying FBS in the shadow of the top 5 but hoping to crack that group in a playoff situation. In this middle league will be most of the viable FBS programs that are not in the Top 5 conferences. My guess is that the WAC dies and what is left of the MAC and Sunbelt Merge and there are only 8 FBS conferences when this is all over. SEC, BIG, BIG 12, ACC, PAC, BE, MWCUSA, MAC/SUNBELT. MAC/Sunbelt will be the hanger ons and FCS move up crowd if there are any spots.

There will be no Big breakaway by the TOP whatever as now they only have to share two spots in whatever replaces the BCS to these two conferences and they still get to schedule them at home for schedule filler while not giving them as much money when there were 5 non BCS AQ leagues. The Top 5 leagues are thinning the herd, not by forcing teams to leave or drop down but by merging them into fewer conferences that only get two slots at the table instead of demanding 5 slots. they get to have their cake at the NCAA table and eat it to.

Guarantee you the top Southern and Eastern FCS teams are calling in like mad. We know APPY and G Southern, ARK St, and ODU are calling as well as just left members UMASS and WKU

My take anyway

Hopefully UM has not missed this train. :(

In that radio interview, he was asked if they'd consider teams from FCS, such as App State, Charlotte, etc. He said yes. Hopefully, Montana/Montana State would garner the same consideration. As much as I love FCS playoffs, the financial woes of the system will likely be what brings it down at some point in the future.

But what if those playoffs don't include teams like: App State, Ga So, Furman, Delaware, UNH, JMU, SHSU, NDSU, UNI, Youngstown, Maine, ODU, et al? Would the playoffs still be so great?

they've done pretty well without boise state, nevada, idaho, troy state, western kentucky, marshall, arkansas state, louisiana tech. a 2-3-4 game run through the playoffs regardless of who it is, will always be more fun than one turd bowl game.
Who's done pretty well? Attendance and TV viewership are very poor for the playoffs.

I wouldn't be suprised to see UM move down to Division2. We are broke and don't want to play body bag games.

You're joking right? That has to be the single most retarded thing anyone has said on this board.

You're confusing sarcasm with retardation.

No, I'm not joking. UM leadership doesn't have the courage or will for a move to a strong conference affiliation as long as the stadium is full resulting in strong profits. They have voiced every possible excuse to justify going down with the ship of FCS football. Do you really think there will be a choice other than Division2?

We could go NAIA, dominate the Frontier and play for the title every year.8-)
