Welcome back Jimmy Wilson

Gaeilge1 said:
There is an old adage that states, "In order to understand a person you must first walk a mile toward him to see what he has seen, then walk a mile behind him to see what he is seeing". Since none of us, (or at least very few), has been through what Jimmy Wilson has been through the past 3 years none of us can appreciate the maturation process that he has been through. I believe that Jimmy Wilson has matured from the boy who was here before. The Kaimin article certainly suggests that this is the case. If he has matured he will be a huge asset to the team, and maybe even a bigger asset to the University and the community as a whole.

It should be noted that this month marks a full year since Jimmy was acquitted, (in two trials the total votes for acquittal was 23, for conviction - 1). In that time there is not a hint of trouble for the young man coming out of Southern California. Had there been I doubt that either the NCAA or the University would have continued to pursue reinstatement. Based on everything that has been published and discussed, both the NCAA and the University have made the right decision and I applaude the diligence of Jimmy Wilson, the University of Montana and the NCAA for reaching what I believe is the right decision.

For those of who do not believe this is the correct decision I would like to hear an objective argument that supports your postion OTHER than the presumption that because of past trespasses, (real or imagined), Jimmy should not be reinstated and allowed to play at this University.

For all of you who wish Jimmy good luck and a welcome back, I agree wholeheartedly. I would only like to add that in addition to good luck Jimmy Wilson will need the full and unequivocal support of GrizNation. He will certainly get mine.

Hey that is great!

Is it still going to be appropriate to play "Bring em out" at Wash Griz?

The line "It's hard to yell with the barrel in your mouth" kind of takes on an anti-ironic meaning with Wilson on the field........

Oh well, I'm sure this discussion to have him back was considered very carefully by all those in charge!

Huzzah!

i'm as puzzled about this as i am about how he beat the murder rap. teflon jimmy. charges, bad reputation...nothing sticks. and now he's driving car's' most people with good jobs can't afford. this is galling.

Perhaps a re-reading of this thread and a little more focus is needed here...

The comments on the Missoulian on the JW article.. wow. I thought eGriz would be a total flamewar on this topic, but the Missoulian is apparently where all the idiots of the internet commenting live.

The crap he did in Missoula before the murder case is reason enough for UM and Jimmy Wilson to go their seperate ways. Pretty crazy to think back to some of the stuff I saw him and his crew do in downtown Missoula.

He deserves a second chance, just not in Missoula or with UM.

djollieballs I don't know what you're suggesting. Don't all college football players from depressed urban areas have late model luxury cars? I doubt you have any idea how cheap it is for a kid to insure a luxury car. I feel like people are faulting Jimmy just because his crew (Sheldon said:

Now DJ is making comments and associations that appear to be based on prejudice and are racist.

The article didn't say whose car Wilson was driving. Wilson's grandmother apparently has some money, and I assume she may have paid for his defense attorney. Wilson started working after he got acquitted.

Why are you associating the house break-in guys with Wilson? Because all of the players or ex-players involved were black? Freeman was Wilson's friend, but who says the others were his friends or associates. Those weren't the guys he hung out with most, or went downtown with. Sheldon didn't even arrive in Missoula until after Wilson went to jail. Wilson probably never even met him. Who says he even knew Dirty, who wasn't a player. The break-in occurred almost 6 months after Wilson left Missouala, and you're associating Wilson with the break-in?

Your comments are completely inappropriate and offbase.

Agreed...I was pretty surprised to see that he was allowed back at UM and on the football team.

I found these quotes from the missoulian regarding JW's past transgressions. Tampa Griz is right...there is no reason for JW to change his ways.

From The Missoulian:

James “Jimmy” Leon Wilson, 20, had numerous run-ins with police in Missoula through the years, though none of the incidents resulted in criminal charges, said Missoula Police Sgt. Travis Welsh, who assisted California authorities with the recent homicide investigation.

“He's no stranger to us,” Welsh said.

...

Welsh said Missoula police have fielded numerous complaints about Wilson's behavior in town through the years, while another detective acknowledged questioning Wilson in at least one assault case.

“There's been past contact,” said Missoula Police Detective Guy Baker.

Police would not elaborate on those instances because Wilson was never charged with a criminal offense in Missoula County.

Over the years, complaints of violence also were brought to officials in UM's athletic department by local residents who contacted the Missoulian in the wake of Wilson's arrest. All asked to remain anonymous in news stories, for fear of retribution.

Among the complainants is a Missoula man who says Wilson threatened him with a gun during an altercation in October 2005, and a Missoula woman who says her son was assaulted downtown in April 2006 by a group of men that included Wilson.

The man said he reported the incident to police and to UM football coach Bobby Hauck, but was told nothing could be done.

In that incident, Wilson allegedly chased the man onto the freeway after an altercation, then stood outside the car and threatened him. The man said Wilson lifted his T-shirt to reveal a pistol tucked into his pants.

Police investigated the downtown assault as a potential felony case, but in May 2006 the victim told authorities he didn't want the investigation to go any further, Welsh said.

According to family members of the victim, he called a halt to the investigation because he feared retribution.

On Tuesday, Bobby Hauck referred all questions to UM associate athletic director Dave Guffey, who directed inquiries to UM executive vice president Jim Foley.

In response to the Missoulian's questions about how the athletic department responded to local residents' complaints, Foley would only reference the murder charges filed in Los Angeles County.

You have anonymous quotes from the Missoulian? Well....I mean....why didn't say so earlier? Please tell me you're not that stupid. You're stupid. But that stupid?....

Dude, I could ask the same question of you. Where there's smoke, there's fire. It is beyond naive to think that all of these stories are just fabrications, some big conspiracy to take down Jimmy Wilson. I don't think you are that naive are you?

But that doesn't really matter, the real issue is, is he enough of a changed man to be a good member on the both the team, but more importantly in the university and the community? I think he will be and I wish him good luck.

Moron. All these Johnny-come-latelies are stupid. Never said a damn thing until long after. You'd have to be stupid to believe that garbage.

Whatever Mr. Naive. I can tell you that I saw him and a few buddies jump a guy outside of Stocks in 2006. Watching boots to the head don't really lead me to discount "that garbage". Hearsay and circumstanstial evidence are just that, but if you hear and see enough of it, and you still can't fathom that any of it could be true, you are the stupid one. Stick your head in the sand some more.

Idiot. Message boards drivel are exactly hearsay and circumstantial evidence. Try referencing one in a bibliography you dope. Geezus.

If there were boots to the head there'd be a police report and a criminal charge you fool. Try harder.

Haha, a bibliography, so out of context. What am I writing a thesis? So you are telling me that every fight/jumping in the past 20 years involving a UM football player has resulted in a police report and a criminal charge? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

If boots to the head....yes.....especially the ones you witness while trying to sniff his jock. Only an idiot would think otherwise.

Dude, you could not be more off-base and it saddens me that you are really this naive. As far as jock-sniffing goes, keep defending your boy, it makes you sound more and more intelligent with every post.

wow, funny you say that 'if boots to the head, then it's in the police report' since we just had two other cornerbacks put boots to the head of guy, but he didn't report it to the police, just the kaimin. naive, naive, naive, yes indeedy, you are naive. and all wet on this one, must've fallen off that surfboard of yours trying to figure out another name to call mtfb.

Let JW write his own last chapter. I would lay money that he shows up to Missoula very businesslike and conducts himself in a very adult manner. He endured something that no poster on this board has. He has a second chance to finish the education and football career that he started after spending 2 years behind bars for something that he was found not guilty of. It sounds to me like he spent enough time thinking about what he wanted to do and how he wanted to do it. He was asked to enroll at Central Washington right away but said he was not ready. Something tells me that he will show up ready to bring his lunch box every day, play with a controlled recklessness and become a role model. If he doesn't he is the guy that has to look at himself in the mirror everyday and say to himself I blew that chance of a life time not once but twice. I am sorry, but I see him leaving here a success story.

Good comment, Grizatheart, and agreed.

As I said, the university, athletic dept and coaches already took into account all of the factors and history, including the stuff in that trashy Missoulian article, and didn't believe or discounted most or much of it. In fact, I know the athletic dept and coaches were discounted much of what was in the article at the time.

I find it interesting that some people won't or can't face reality. No matter what the actions and evidence to the contrary, they keep saying they're right and the rest of the world is wrong. They always seem to think they know more than the people who are closest to the action, who run the show or who have gathered the facts.

The BS that came out on JW after his arrest just kept growing, rumors were flying everywhere, and then some people started believing all the rumors. Again, not saying Wilson or any number of the current or former Griz are or were angels.

Wilson is in a great position, alright. He has marks like you to bleed dry.

Get all you can, while you can Jimmy!
