Welcome back Jimmy Wilson

OK...so here's the question nobody is asking: It's been five years since he had a uniform on. Is he still athletic enough to play at the FCS level? If so, I hope the coaching staff is on the stick with a stern go-and-get-in-shape plan. Otherwise, I wish him well in his second coming as a GRIZ.

Wilson played spring ball in '07. So it's been 3 years and 10 weeks since he's had a jersey on, not 5 years. My guess is that Wilson is in terrfic shape. He lifted the whole time he was in jail. He was very buff when he got out. I'm sure he's been preparing for this opportunity the whole time his ncaa petition has been pending. He was known to have a very good work ethic when he was playing. As others have said, players come back from LDS missions all the time and start playing again. I assume Wilson has been working out more consistently than most on LDS missions.

Playerep:

How do you know he worked out on the weights while in the slammer? How do you actually know that he was "really buff" when he was let out? Where you there? Just sayin', of course, 'cause I was not and maybe you have some real first hand intel instead of just being hopeful. If your are right, then more power to him and us, but let us kindly know just how you know this inside stuff. And btw, you were right that it has only been three years instead of five. We all hope he stayed in shape instead of just layin' around, eating and watching TV.

66vovlo,

Besides being a great read, this Kaimin article makes several mentions of Jimmy's conditioning. Take a look at the picture at the top of the article and you will see he is ripped after his release. This article came out in October or November of last year so I would assume he is still in very good shape and well-conditioned if he has stuck to the routine mentioned in the article.

Who cares about the hoopla this will create for the team. This guy deserves to be back on the team, in the town that shunned him. This whole country has the "innocent until proven guilty" statement completely backwards. I hope he comes back, plays his heart out and lands himself postseason awards. I'll be cheering for him.

I communicated with JW while he was in jail, I am friends with one of the people who assisted his lawyer, and I talked to various people who visited him in jail and/or saw him after he got out, including Tim Hauck. Good enough for you?

Bobcat Nation is perhaps unequaled as an expert on the subjects of crime and guilt and student athletes.

Short article on Yahoo.com from AP http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-montana-jimmywilson

Jimmy is at an age where he could have grown up tremendously in 3+years. I would imagine that his time in jail has taught him a lot about consequences for choices one makes. Now that he is one of the older players - not only might he not be a distraction/problem, but he may turn out to be a real leader of the team. Now wouldn't that be something to see.

So I guess the question is whether Jimmy rolls into town with his Lincoln Navigator or his Cadillac CTS?

From the Kaimin article:
He makes no apologies for being a playboy. Wilson is a showman, driving a 2005 teal Cadillac CTS, with 22-inch rims and Jay-Z shaking the black-tinted windows. At the first red light he hits, just 60 seconds from his mother’s apartment, he notices a California bunny behind him, to the right, driving a bronze sports car. Wilson rolls down his back window, and catches her attention. He waves his pinky and thumb like a phone to his ear, and she signals to him to pull into a gas station ahead.
The strangers exchange numbers, and when Wilson gets back into the car, he is smiling. He rubs his chin stubble. “I’ve never changed,” he says. “I’m not taking anything for granted anymore.”

Doesn't necessarily sound like a changed man to me...

Why should he change? He's an innocent man. Do you want him to change into a criminal. You're stupid.

are those really the only 2 options? i have never been a criminal and always try to make positive changes. does that mean i have to change into a criminal too? let's forget about the shooting. was the guy really a perfect angel before then or is there a tiny chance he could make some changes in his life that would be positive? :?

Please tell me where I said he should change. I'm the stupid one? You stay classy San Diego.

I was addressing one of the many posts similar to behapps talking about how JW has changed/grown up/matured...etc. I'm suggesting that perhaps he hasn't changed/grown up/matured.

Back to the original question...is he rolling into town in his Caddy, his Navigator, or will he have a new $40k tricked out ride?

The key comment is, "He is not taking anything for granted anymore." To me that is a huge change and can keep you from making stupid mistakes in other areas of your life. To many people wait till they are 50+ before they realize they have just gone through the motions and taken everything in their life for granted. Jimmy may still be a lady's man, but I have a feeling he is going to do the right thing with school etc. There is no question he has the NFL on his mind, so we may see something special out of Jimmy on the field. I hope so anyway.

Welcome back Jimmy, but stay away from my daughter. Just joking I don't have a daughter.

Classy comment CWR

I have been waiting all day to get home and post on this. I can only read egriz from work. I think everyone has pretty well said it all. I am surprised the anti JW crowd has kept reserved for the most part, but know a few are sitting back for him to mess up, and a few others will have their say. I am surprised alpha has not posted his outlook on this, both good and bad. Then again, maybe whatever he has to say will be lessened with Hauck out of the picture on this now.

Speaking of Hauck, as this has played out the way it has, and a new coach willing to let him comeback, maybe the situation called for handling it the way Hauck did at that time. I would be interested in a more candid statement from Pflu on his outlook. I am guessing he seen this very similar to how Hauck did, and likely got a lot of feedback from those close to the program, former coaches, and former players.

I feel this is the right decision at the current time. However, the decision is made easier without taking as much heat with Hauck being gone. As a fan, I have no doubts the University, O'day, Dennison, etc have never put their necks out more than on this decision. Dennison is retiring, nonetheless one false move from JW could tarnish Dennison badly. As for O'day, has there ever been an AD at Montana to through more controversial issues/subjects, with tough decisions to make. O'day very well could be risking his career on this.

As for JW, he has either changed his life for the better from all he has been though, or like anyone can revert to old ways and give into his vices. Jimmy, most of GRIZNATION welcome you back with open arms. We will be pulling for you as hard as anyone. My hope is your story ends up being positive for yourself, your family, and Montana. The great stories of recent past are Mike Chavez, JD Quinn, AJ and SNJ, and Tuff Harris (being a native American.) My hope is Jimmy's story turns out to be the best of them all. If that turns out to be the case, and if a book or tv show comes out about this, please do what is right and give back to charities or the University.

I hope when you graduate, you will be the biggest advocate of GRIZ athletics and U of M. Jimmy, you are now in a spotlight beyond any spotlight ever at this university. Take this opportunity and run with it, let it take you to the best life will have to offer you. Welcome back Jimmy and family.

As for on the field, we should have the best CB tandem in the FCS. 2 Cb's with potential NFL talent, not to mention an intimidating hard hitting CB that will bring fear to WR's again. Maybe some of Wilson's hitting will become contagious for all the defense.
Of course we all HOPE the best for JW... but let's be real. WE NEEDED A CORNERBACK. Do you think that might have weighed on the minds of the coaching staff. This is an overall great story, but if he was a tightend, would the urgency have been there to bring him back in? Just playing devil's advocate. I, like everyone else, wishes Jimmy the best of luck. But there's that one little thing that makes you raise an eyebrow. Am I complaining.... HELL NO!!! GO GRIZ!!!!!!!!

You said it again in your own post moron. And yes, you're stupid because you want him to change into a criminal. Anyone that wants someone to change into a criminal is phucking stupid.

And don't worry about what black drive. There are far more pressing matters that you should worry about instead of black people.

wtb was just trying to stir up trouble. There was no point whatsoever in taking that quote out of article and trying to make something of it. It's not clear what the quote meant, assuming it was occurate in the first place. It looks to me that it meant that being in jail and having a tough stuff to get through didn't change him for the worse.

I don't know what you're suggesting. Don't all college football players from depressed urban areas have late model luxury cars? I doubt you have any idea how cheap it is for a kid to insure a luxury car.

I feel like people are faulting Jimmy just because his crew (Sheldon, Q-Free, Dirty, Pate, Colman) epic failed a drug robbery and all went to prison. I bet that would have never happened if Jimmy wouldn't have killed that dude with that gun they never found. Jimmy is such a stand up guy he would have told those guys how wrong their plot was and would have stopped them!

Is the whole gang going to move back in together? Man I hope so, I'm sure all those guys have redeemed themselves! I mean, if there is going to be a uplifting movie about Jimmy perhaps they should get a documentary film crew to follow their exploits around Missoula just like Bron Bron and CB4!!!!!!

I seriously can not believe how much Jimmy has turned his life around! He is totally going to back down when the local tough guys and washed up has-been's step to him downtown! Oh wait, Jimmy hates going downtown! He's going to stay home and study film and finish his degree the whole time he's in Missoula! Q-Free is going to be his study buddy!

Wow, are our young players in for a treat that they get to witness Jimmy's inspirational message! Seriously, who is a better influence than a player 4 years older than them that just spent two years in prison in Southern California for killing a guy? I can't think of anyone I would rather have around my college team!

What an uplifting magical story!

This Griz team is going to be straight up lethal!!!

Excuse me, I need to go back and re-read this thread!

There is an old adage that states, "In order to understand a person you must first walk a mile toward him to see what he has seen, then walk a mile behind him to see what he is seeing". Since none of us, (or at least very few), has been through what Jimmy Wilson has been through the past 3 years none of us can appreciate the maturation process that he has been through. I believe that Jimmy Wilson has matured from the boy who was here before. The Kaimin article certainly suggests that this is the case. If he has matured he will be a huge asset to the team, and maybe even a bigger asset to the University and the community as a whole.

It should be noted that this month marks a full year since Jimmy was acquitted, (in two trials the total votes for acquittal was 23, for conviction - 1). In that time there is not a hint of trouble for the young man coming out of Southern California. Had there been I doubt that either the NCAA or the University would have continued to pursue reinstatement. Based on everything that has been published and discussed, both the NCAA and the University have made the right decision and I applaude the diligence of Jimmy Wilson, the University of Montana and the NCAA for reaching what I believe is the right decision.

For those of who do not believe this is the correct decision I would like to hear an objective argument that supports your postion OTHER than the presumption that because of past trespasses, (real or imagined), Jimmy should not be reinstated and allowed to play at this University.

For all of you who wish Jimmy good luck and a welcome back, I agree wholeheartedly. I would only like to add that in addition to good luck Jimmy Wilson will need the full and unequivocal support of GrizNation. He will certainly get mine.

i'm as puzzled about this as i am about how he beat the murder rap. teflon jimmy. charges, bad reputation...nothing sticks. and now he's driving car's' most people with good jobs can't afford. this is galling.
