Week 5: Montana @ Portland State Game Thread

If interceptions on 2 point conversions don't count in the stats, how does Strahm's "pick 2" show in the books?

The outcome of the play, the points, count, but no individual stats on such plays are included in the official stats.

Ahh.

Since we could not find the game on any TV station, and our streaming totally sucks, I had only the stats posted on ESPN to go on. They do not credit the Griz with 5 picks -- but I'd agree that would make huge difference. Also, watching the online play-by-play, I would have to agree that the Griz D "rose up" when it really mattered. Plus, although the Griz O got out-gained on the ground, they provided a pretty good level of ball-control ... enough so the D was not totally gassed at the end. I think that was damned important.
That is because interceptions on 2 point conversions do not count in official stats.
I saw the earlier post on that. They make a small difference in points ... but I think have an even bigger impact "psychologically."

Still, for all the gloom-and-doomers, I think this was a damn good win for the Griz on the road.

One of the strangest games I can remember in a long time.

Griz out-gained in total yards: 544-454 (-90)
Griz obliterated in the ground game: 295-170 (-125). Averaged 3.5 yards per rush, vs 6.4 for PSU.
PSU first downs 30, Griz 26.
TOP a wash: 30:46 for Griz vs 29:14
Slight advantage in turnovers: 3 for Griz, 2 for PSU
Not a big advantage in passing yards: 284 vs 249 (+35), although the Griz averaged 7.5 vs 5.9 for PSU.

Stat that mattered: Griz 45-33 (+12) for the final score.

An odd, but I’d call it a “workmanlike” win on the road -- especially on the road.

Whatever. GO GRIZ! :egriz:

Strong had 4 picks and Strahm had 1. The 5 picks are probably the diference in the game and the explanation. Plus, I thought D played most of the time at critical times.

How do we get 3 turnovers with 5 picks?

If you want to overlook the opponent.

UM cannot take ISU for granted next week. From what I saw, they are far better than PSU.

That is debatable. They barely beat an 0-4 Cal Poly team...

They trailed most of the game that I saw by 14 and came alive in the 4th quarter. But, it is a gimme, right? And, UM just beat a PSU team that was 0-3...

I don't think there are any "gimmes" left in our schedule...

Cal Poly is arguably the worst team in the conference this year though. ISU barely beat them. I don't know how that makes them "far better" than PSU. ISU is better than expected, but we should be the favorites next week.

Glad for win but not impressed except for some individual play (Strong, Curran) Special team coverage and returns were pathetic and too many yards by a QB running.....too many total yards also. Jensen looked more like a freshman than ever. He will improve, but evident he doesn't yet have what Reece did. Oline was very good on run blocking when not a ROP play. Better improve or ISU might win and that is scary

I won’t dispute your comments on special teams and will agree wholeheartedly about the returns. Something is seriously wrong with the return game. I hope the coaches zero in on that this week. Jensen did look like a freshman, but I think that is really the point. Road win with a freshman who started the second game of his career. That is good news and the offensive line is looking far better this year. Jensen also stood in the pocket and took some hits while delivering key strikes to receivers. The offense is doing their job. Play calling in the fourth was not to my liking. Conservative. Defense did a pretty solid job in the second half. Held PSU to 7 until that last reception very late in the game. Special teams on kickoffs - meh. Overall there is still much room for improvement. This team is young and any road win is a good one.

The BSC is a total crap shoot. I honestly thought Weebs would take MSU to the woodshed - even though they were on the road. EWU - Weebs - ISU - Griz, who knows. This year will be interesting.

Yes, when Strahn scored, he didn't get an official pick, and they took away the 4th imaginary one that I gave Strong. I must have counted the one on the sideline going out of bounds that he would have gotten if he had had 2 hands. Ha.

How do we get 3 turnovers with 5 picks?

The interceptions on the 2 point conversion plays do not count in the stats.

Sorry Helena, let me rephrase that. If Strong had 4 interceptions (and maybe he didn't), how do we end up with 3 turnovers.

NM, I think I got it.

I swear some people are not EVER going to be happy. Our D gave up 26 and scored 8 themselves. You do that every week and you're gonna win a buttload of football games. People bitch about Stitt's road record...he goes out and gets a road win and they bitch because of the qualityi of the opponent. ANY road win is a good win. And all those running yards in the last five minutes don't mean shit....they were helping us run out the clock....I don't care if they give up 800 yards a game, if the point differential is 18 every game we will win OUT.

I also don't think this win counts because it was played in a high school stadium. Plus, I hear that the refs are checking Strong's club to see if it had magic catching power in it.

Oh just some pine tar smeared all over it 😜

Question (curiosity) for those who were there, or could get the game on TV: How was the crowd? That is, did the PSU fans show up, or were the few who did out-numbered by Griz fans?

We were at the game, and I'd say Griz fans definitely outnumbered PSU fans. At least half of the main stands were filled with Griz fans, and overflow Griz fans sat in the endzone. The other side of the main stands was pretty full of PSU fans.
