Weber State Wildcats Scouting Report

it's very rare that there's a thread over here with so many people skeptical of a griz win. I get that there might be some matchup issues with weber. but my take after the cats played them was they're not that great. and I certainly didn't come away thinking that their defense was dominant. i'm not aware of other great offenses they have shut down but I didn't walk out of that stadium thinking their defense was the reason the cats lost.

I just don't think the griz lose this one. unfortunately.... ;)

I totally agree with this. msu had a chance early to put that game away but couldn't get in the end zone. From that point on it was a dog fight which could have went either way. Fact is I thought msu was as good but Murray made a few decisions that were questionable.

your offense appears to be clicking. I think you'll score some points.

I don't think webers' offense is terrible. they're qb was solid and pretty accurate. as mentioned before their tight end is a baller. and I thought there run game was adequate.

i'm not trying to bash weber. I think they are a good team. I just feel the griz just look a bit better right now.

Yep. UW was the only great defense you've played against from my perspective. In fact I don't know that you've played against even good defenses other than them. Weber has a great defense.

NAU and MSU have good or great defenses.

You never had credibility over here, though with this statement you officially have none. MSU may have one "great" defensive player, a couple of "fair" ones, and multiple questionable players. As a whole MSU has an improved yet still very mediocre defensive unit.

Versus any team with a passing game the bobcat MO has been to play a prevent defense for the entire game. Consequently the cats avoid too many 75 yard gains while regularly giving up the 20 to 30 yard pass play (typically on 3rd down).

I expect Weber's defense will be one of the best the Grizzlies have faced this year. None the less, if our QB is 'on' and the O line gives him any time we will move the ball well. I don't expect a 40 pt outing but believe we can hang four touchdowns on them. That should be enough. :ugeek:

I think the CATS have a pretty good defense. We're pretty banged up and playing a bunch of 18 year old kids that make some mistakes here and there but TG has these guys fighting hard and scrapping, and I think the schemes are good. We're 3rd in the Big Sky in scoring defense and I believe we've held every team we've played to below their scoring average, some if them significantly below. That's good enough for me at this point. The next few games will be very telling for CATS and griz. Also, no I haven't changed my tune on my prediction for this game. I predict the griz will lose and I don't think I ever said "Absolutely zero chance" of the griz winning because this is the Big Sky. My gut feel is a 14 point Weber win but I'm not betting anything on that.

Msu great defense is not that much better stats wise then Montana
passing yards msu 249 Montana 304 55yds per game difference
rushing yards per game 134 -159 25yds per game difference
Passing D eff 130.5 - 130.7
sacks for Griz 22 17 for cats
3rd down % against 39% Griz 49% cats ouch almost 50% cats
4th down conv against Griz 3/10 30% 8/12 66% double ouch
Griz have 10 ints Cats have 1.

Bottom line is for as much as people think the Griz D is terrible Cats D is not in the "Great" category
through seven games!

I agree with ya 100% Mav! And notice I never said "MSU has a great defense". I said MSU and NAU have good or great defenses. IMO from the current body of work MSU has at least a good defense and may be great but probably not - I'll tell you after we play our next four games. NAU at this point is pretty good on D, maybe great. My final point on this, stats don't mean much if you're not getting it done in the W\L column but if there are any D stats I'm going to pay attention to points scored against is the only one that I care about.

Your argument makes zero sense with even less analysis. But we are in agreement.

If Semore can adjust for a new safety, and can find a way to stop the run while not getting burned by their TE or outside threat...then I think we win by 2 touchdowns. I just don’t think that’s going to happen. Semore seems to only know how to trot out a good defense when everything goes as he expected and gameplanned for. Anything outside of that absolutely paralyzes the defense.

I don't really need a bunch of analysis because I've seen both teams play. I think your offense shines against shitty defenses but struggles against good defenses and Weber has a great defense.

So once? To a top tier FBS team?

I've watched MSU quite a bit this year and against Weber. I wouldn't call the Cat defense good or great. Sometimes good.. mostly inconsistent.

If Gresch can get the Griz up two touchdowns, the game will be over at that point. Owning TOP does you no good if you turn the ball over and 15 seconds later have a TD rang up on you.
The Griz defense seems to be a combination of run stop with QB pressure and hope for the best in the backfield. If Weber is coming from behind, they will be in trouble with INTs and dropped passes.
Yes, the Cats have a good defense, but who do you put your best defender on? Too many receivers who can find a way to get out in the open. WildCats will be running until they are down two TDs. Then they will have to go to the air. At that point, they will be much more vulnerable to the pressure from the front 7.
And then we win.

They sound like the new Monsters of the Midway. No wonder they are so far ahead of us in the polls...

In couple of years we're all going to be saying "NDS who?". You heard it here first.
