Weber State vs Montana history

Some history on the Weber State / Montana rivalry series. (both weberstatesports and gogriz called it a rivalry so I'm sticking to it)

Spoilers, it's ugly from a Weber p.o.v.

The Griz lead the series 40-14, (including a 18-7 lead in Ogden), and have won 22 of the last 27 games. (Though I'm having a hard time finding that 40th win, every time I count Montana's wins since the schools started playing each other in 1962 I always only reach 39 Did the schools ever meet before 1962?)

From 1988 to 2007 The Griz went 17-2, however since 2008 the series is a little "closer" with Montana only leading 5-3. Only one of those 5 Griz wins came out of Stewart Stadium.

Since 2008 the home team is 6-2 in the series. Each team scoring a road win in that span.

This is Montana's first trip to Ogden since 2012 (Weber has been to Missoula twice in that same span of time) and are 1-2 in the last three played in Stewart Stadium.

Montana comes in as the 2nd most games played against by Weber in their history with 54 games. Only Idaho State has been played more by Weber State with 55 games, Montana State is 3rd at 53 games and NAU is 4th at 51 games.

Cool stats WILDCAT, thank you. I would have thought Weber has beaten us every time we came to Ogden since 2000. For some reason I remember Griz playing bad at Weber. I can still see Trumaine Johnson getting beat multiple times because of the slippery rain soaked turf.

Thanks for summarizing the history.

It's about as I thought it would be, although I didn't realize it was 5-3 over the last eight games. Regardless of the final outcome I expect this year should be an exciting close game. Hope our boys make it 6-3 over the last nine.

Also, I'm surprised Montana is second on the list of Weber's most played opponents. Being long time Big Sky foes I'd expect they'd be somewhere near the top but not #2 overall. Good luck to your kids. Hope everyone comes away healthy... after a Grizzly win. :ugeek:

I bet the 40th win was the playoff game in Wa-Griz in 08 (or whenever).

Weber State and Montana have played every year since 1962 (including twice in 2008) except 2014 and 2016. Had the two schools played those years Montana would be Weber's #1 most played school with 56 games. Just one of the downsides to the way the Big Sky does their scheduling.

I wondered that too, but the list of games I have looked at has that game listed and it still only comes to 39 :|

Oddly enough we beat them in Ogden in 2012, the year we went 5-6. Of course Weber was 2-9 that year.

Which year was that?

Edit, The site I am using does not have the 2001 game listed that the Montana Grizzlies won 38-23.

There is the 40th win. Mystery solved

I remember the first time Weber came to UM (MSU,then). It had snowed the day before and the poor cheerleaders, on the same side of the old Dornblaser, were constantly bombarded with snowballs. It was called Webber (like the BBQ) and, as I recall, Webber won. But, I managed to stumble to the Stocks so who really cared?
