weber report

saw them lose a toughie today to u.s.f. by two.

during the warmups, i was not impressed by weber. they do not have imposing physical talent, and one of their new guards, mccoy, seemed ridiculously tiny out there, a stretch at 5'6". ditto randy rahe, who i saw walking though the lobby. in his baggy suit, he looks like he just showed up to graduate from eighth grade.

game got going, and i was immediately impressed by arturas valeika. at 6'9", he's a mobile quick leaper, always alert, did a marvelous defensive job on u.s.f.'s star, lowhorn, a ballyhooed oakland kid who went off to play for bobby knight before transferring back. me, i'd take valeika, straight up.

game continues, and i'm more and more impressed with weber. this team is disciplined, plays tough defense and never takes a play off. just goes to prove, you don't need to be an imposing 6'9" krysko or tinkle to get the most out of your players, an eighth-grader can do it.

and then young mr. mccoy emerges. he's "the real." he can play--quick, deadeye free throw shooter, even grabbed five rebounds. juan pable silveira shows up, steve panos shows he's got some talent, dezmon harris shows his quicks, and you can see, this is not a bad team. they lead most of the game, only to have u.s.f. hit some key threes down the stretch. when valeika fouls out on a questionable call with just under two minutes left, it's pretty much finis for weber.

but you have to be impressed with randy rahe. he gets the most out of his talent, and he may be one of the game's up-and-coming young coaches.

how to play them?

echoes of this board: go big. much as i like valeika, i think qvale, strait and hasquet dominite weber's big three of valeika, panos and trevor morris, a true freshman. we must exploit those matchups, because at the guard positions, weber is much quicker. if it's harris, mccoy and silveira against staudacher, rundles and martin, weber wins. we must exploit our advantage with the bigs.

by the way, weber is now 2-6, though they've lost to utah, b.y.u., illinois and u.s.f., some good teams. i wonder if portland state isn't the team to beat.

WSU definately has their work cut out for them...the midget actually is very good. 2nd leading rebounder on the team right now! lol

Arturas will be one of the top big men in the 'Sky this year, as for JP Silveira who along with Dez Harris are supposed to be our best players but haven't done well this year do to injuries. JP-knee tendinitus, Dez-sour hip.

I believe the way to beat Weber thus far is a full court press. Our turnovers have been a disaster this year. We had 25 against USF and they scored 27 points and we lost by 2.

I think every team so far has a shot at hosting minus ISU, EWU, & Sac.
