Score is UND 16-13 @ 11:44 mark of first half.

Lady Griz get a split on the roadtrip weekend.

. . . UND improved to 2-0 in league play with a tight 59-52 win over Montana on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,606 fans at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in a rematch of last year’s conference championship game. “It’s always good to beat the Montana schools, especially the first two games of the season,” UND center Emily Evers said. “We’re happy to be where we’re at, and now we’re ready to move forward next week.” UND led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but Montana charged back to tie the game at 45 on a Hannah Doran 3-pointer with six minutes left. During that stretch, UND went nearly seven minutes without a field goal. The Lady Griz (8-5 overall, 1-1 Big Sky) would take two leads the rest of the way. The last lead came on a Shanae Gilham spinning runner with four minutes left for a 50-49 Montana edge.

. . . spirited second-half comeback, the Montana women’s basketball team came up short in its bid to knock off defending Big Sky Conference champion North Dakota on Saturday.

The Lady Griz trailed by 15 points with just under 15 minutes left and rallied to take a one-point lead on a Shanae Gilham field goal with just under four minutes to play. But NoDak had more in the tank down the stretch in posting a 59-52 victory in front of 1,606 fans at the Betty Engelstad Center. “We did everything we needed to do and we just couldn’t score,” Montana coach Robin Selvig told KGVO radio, referring to his team’s 22 for 71 shooting from the floor.
“We shot poorly around the basket. They defended us well but what did we throw up, 31 percent? Basically they’re in the low 50s at home if we don’t have to foul late but we just couldn’t score enough points.” North Dakota, 20-2 at home over the past two seasons, used its imposing size and strength down low to take a 42-27 lead with 14:49 remaining. Then the Lady Griz came alive, using staunch defense and five points by Hannah Doran in an 18-3 run that knotted the score at 45-45 with under six minutes left. The lead changed hands several times from there, with Gilham coming off the bench to twice give her team the lead -- once on a 3-ball and again on a reverse layup that kissed off the glass. From there the hosts imposed their will, using a clutch close-range bucket by sophomore guard Leah Szabla to seize the lead for good with just under four minutes left, 51-50.

The ladies had a few long stretches where they couldn't throw it in the ocean yesterday. Valley especially had a rough game. From when I started watching (about 1/2 way through 1st half), to the end of the game, Valley missed every shot she took (6 or 8 I think).
