Tinkle interviewed for and was offered the Stanford head coaching position this offseason, but turned it down after Oregon State offered an extension that came with a substantial pay increase.

Under Tinkle, the Beavers are 29-5 when leading at halftime, 30-2 when leading with five minutes to play, and 9-2 in games decided by five points or less. They are also 27-5 (.844) at home in Gill Coliseum.

The 50-year-old Tinkle, who signed a six-year contract when he was hired, became the fourth OSU coach since 1928 to record a winning record in his first season.

I am happy for Wayne. Also he is very rare in this profession. He is actually committed to a program and does not leave immediately for a historically better program. It says a lot about his character to turn down Stanford. I bet OSU fans are very happy he is loyal to them. Congrats Wayne.

I agree, loyalty is huge. It shows true character from the coach to be able to turn down a move to another school for more $$$ (though I wouldn't blame them if they took it) Jay Hill was offered a substantial pay raise to join Whittingham's staff at Utah but turned it down to remain the head man at Weber. Likewise Randy Rahe just signed an 8 year contract extension with Weber State despite another school offering him much higher pay. In the article about it, Randy said this about Stew Morrill.

Stew Morrill gave me this advice a long time ago: Never take a job for money. You take a job for the fit for you and your family

That is great advice, and one more coaches should seriously consider

Randy has been loyal to Weber, and Weber has rewarded him for it.

Seeing what Wayne has done at Oregon State is really something. They have to be tremendously excited at what he has done there. It is a point of pride that he continues to represent the "Montana Tree" for basketball coaching. And too, that he remains a loyal "Griz" at the same time.
