Here is a question or two...is a kid that scores one point a game in the PAC 12 as a SO a sure fire star for us as a JR? If we land him,he and Martin will be playing the same position in the same year in school. So, are we really wanting to put the breaks on a kid like Dunn in order to have two centers in the game? If this dude is a future star, why is he falling to us? Why are none of the teams he played against beating down his door to pick him up?

Just a few questions that popped into my head as I read through this thread. Does not sound like anyone has actually seen him play so I guess I am confused on how we go from that to pulling out the anointing oil, as Bill Parcels would say.

I do not think people are saying anything about him being a star. I think it has much more to do with have a solid, serviceable big man, especially with a shortage of such players on the Griz roster. I also wonder how this turned a conversation about Dunn, a guy that plays a different position, and last I looked, most teams play 2 bigs.

Why he is leaving Arizona? That is between them.

Why should we bring him him?
(1) AT 6'9" and athletic, he can play both PF and C (Martin is Center only).
(2) We need more depth in the post
(3) We need shotblocking and rebounding. Which is exactly what this player specializes in. Feel free to read the previous posts about him. Feel free to search his name, and see what rivals and scout.com have to say about him.
(4) Wayne is a great big man coach. Sounds like Wayne might be exactly what this kid is looking for in a coach.
(5) He is looking for more playing time, instead of a crowded frontcourt at Arizona.
(6) Martin needs to develop more physically, which he will do. Hutchison moves on after this season. The GRIZ get much needed quality depth in the paint, and he gets a chance to be the main man in the paint.

It sucks this kid will have to sit out this year. His presence will help develop Hutchison and Martin, in particular. What is there to not like about getting a player like this? We do not need a big scorer. We do need a paint defender and rebounder though.

Granted, we will have to free up another scholarship to get him. Who knows, maybe 1 player already told us, he will not be returning next season? Plus, we don't know to what extent Deshields, Weisner, and Henderson are in trouble. It is possible Wayne wants to make a loud statement about off the court expectations, and willing to let someone walk to do it. Maybe someone is not cutting it academically either. None of us know the reason behind Wayne still looking to add more frontcourt depth. It surely does not hurt to look .

GB1 summed it up well. It has to be done to take this program to a higher level. :thumb:

By the way, I see someone asked if Wayne is giving up on Martin? Martin is still a big part of the GRIZ future. Ideally, a team needs 3 or 4 quality true paint players to be very competitive nationally. Sorry, Weisner, and Coleman are not true post players. They are true 3's. As stated above, Hutchison is done after this year. If we land this player, that will give the GRIZ, Martin, Kemp, and Chol for our Pf/C rotation in 2014. I am sure they will look to land 1 more big guy too.

Fair enough, grizrule. I am not really against getting this kid. I am always just a little more skeptical than most when it comes to transfers. We just have no idea what we are getting other than knowing he didn't cut it somewhere else. Could be this dude did not progress the way they thought he would because he gave up going to the gym and picked up binge drinking. We just don't know. We do know that Tinks is only 1 for 5 the past couple years with transfers, in fact you could argue that his only real misses have been with transfers. It gives me pause any time we talk about following Brad Huse's game plan of bringing in a bunch of hired guns every year. I prefer high school kids myself.

Google search his name. Sean Miller, Arizona's coach said many good things about him. Especially the personal part of the kid.

I think it'd be a huge get if we end up with Chol. Kansas and North Carolina aren't in the business of offering scholarships to players who aren't insanely talented. This guy was a shot blocking machine in high school and runner up for Mr. Basketball in California.

I wouldn't say Tinkle has missed on all but 1 of the last 5 transfers either. Coleman certainly hasn't been a miss, and neither was Art. Just went over the list of JC and Transfers Tinkle has got here and the majority of them haven't been misses. Some didn't play a ton of minutes, but did contribute. Like for example I wouldn't call Banny a miss, even though he didn't play a ton. When he was in the game he got damn near every f'n rebound & loose ball (seriously, look at his rebounds per minute played..pretty impressive).

Coleman - Definitely NOT a miss.
Kovavevic - Miss..sort of? Not sure if you can count this one..
Wood - Stayed through his senior season, didn't produce much offensively, but wouldn't say a "miss"
Steward - Definitely NOT a miss.
Adams - Transferred away (Miss?)
Young - Transferred away (Miss?)
Johnson - Definitely NOT A miss.
Taylor - Played a fair amount, starting many games, went to play baseball his senior year, not a miss.
Banny - Finished his college BB career here, great rebounder, NOT a miss)
McGillis - Graduated, and started much of his career here, not a miss.
Elgin-Taylor - Starting PG much of his time here, not a miss.

I think we can trust Tinkle on this...he really has a pretty good record with getting us some quality transfers over the years to fill in spots that we need help.

I'm going to disagree with you on wood. I think he was a good locker room guy, but he was a huge disappointment on the floor. He was brought in to be a shooter and he was awful from outside. He had good numbers in juco but that didn't translate to D1.

I loved watching Banny. He and steward were just those great kind of hustle players.

I went back and forth on that one honestly. Wood started a fair number of games his Junior year, but only shot like 23% from 3 point range, and 46% from the FT Line (ouch). His senior year he didn't play much, was 0-9 from the FT line and 22% from 3...

I guess on Wood I can see both sides having a decent argument. Either way I think Tinkle has done a pretty good job over all picking up transfers to fill holes when needed, and I'm excited to see Kemp and maybe Chol (hopefully) in Griz uniforms!

Also agree 100% with Banny. He was an undersized 4 (majorly undersized) but busted his ass every minute he got, and seemed to have a knack for getting rebounds.

Good responses guys. thanks! I like the sounds of this dude too and i will trust Tinkle. Just thought I would offer some food for thought.

This kid with 3 years of Tinks coaching him up is NBA talent. Without a post coach to teach him how to be an offensive post he is a very athletic and good player. While I'm sure Montana wasn't his dream landing spot when he was a heralded recruit, it should be his dream landing spot now.

Very well said grizrule! I got my hopes up now, from where i sit this would be a big time pick up. Him leaving arizona (i think) had more to do with the fact that they brought in 3 guys ranked in espns top 16 overall last year, all at his positions, who were more polished, than his work ethic or development. They also have Aaron Gordon the #4 overall player coming in next year who is an explosive PF. With a year to develop and get acclimated to his new home could pay big dividends this season in practice and on court the following years. Our offense will be that much better just with his activity and offensive rebounding ability. Not to mention he has the potential to be an as good or better shot blocker than BQ, i see very little downside. As others have stated we need to get more athletic and if nothing else Angelo has that like we have'nt seen in a LONG time. Fingers crossed, GO GRIZ!!!

That would be (I think) Martin Breunig. The question now is, did anything come of the visit? The May 15 signing date has passed. :?

Interesting it looks like bruenig went to the same prep school as Martin.

Out of HS Rivals had Breunig as the #24 Power Forward in the country.

According to Weber's compliance guy, transfers can still sign after the May 15 deadline. That deadline is just for NLIs, which are different than other signings.

Those signing periods apply only to the NLI. Outside of NLI signing periods, a grant-in-aid (aka scholarship) can be signed. That document without the NLI is binding on the school but not the student-athlete. FWIW, 4-4 transfers cannot sign NLIs.

By the way, and if you're interested, Weber is in the running for Marquette transfer Juan Anderson. He was a big time recruit coming out of HS in Oakland.

Behind forty or fifty others, right?

Someone to take over the position that Frank Otis vacated, most likey.

He has four schools, including Weber and 3 PAC12 schools, on his list. He would have to sit out a year so he wouldn't be replacing anyone this season.

I dredged up this old thread to just mention that Former Billings Central basketball star Daniel Meyer who is mentioned earlier in this thread has really been having a great Summer on the AAU circuit playing for the Colorado Chaos AAU team. Meyer who will be attending Quakerdale New Promise Academy prep school next year has been reclassified to the 2014 recruiting class. So far Meyer has secured offers (again for 2014) from South Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, Western Illinois, and Idaho State. Additionally he is getting a lot of attention recently but no offers yet, from Yale, Idaho, Stephen F. Austin, Northern Colorado, Columbia and the Griz. I expect him to get more interest and offers before the November signing period.
