Good to hear of a few bigs coming into play. It would be great to get one of these guys, and add a solid walk on. I wonder if we could add 2, if we have any unheard of defections. I like the little I read on Boyd, sounds like he would help us with scoring in the paint.

I was excited to read about him when grizzlyjournal mentioned him and likewise disappointed when I saw the Drake commitment. I know it is a revolving door process until we get a commitment. I do think that this staff is pretty good at keeping someone once they have committed to us.

Strengths:
Boyd is a solid looking power forward with a nice frame for the Division I level. He has face-up skills and is a strong competitor. He can score down low and has solid footwork while maneuvering around his defender. In addition, he can step out and nail the 17-foot jump shot with regularity. He plays the game right way and with a great attitude that is infectious.
Weaknesses:
Boyd is a solid athlete with decent bounce and quickness, but he'll need to continue to work on those areas. His post game is solid, but he needs to develop a go-to move as well as a counter move to keep defenses honest. While posting up he needs to continue to learn to stay low (bend knees) to get more on balance against stronger defenders.
Bottom Line:
Boyd is a solid 4-man prospect for the mid-major level. He has the frame, skills, and approach to be an affective player at the Division I level.

I heard from a very solid intel that Jared Dimakos (a 6-5 wing) was on campus for an official but did not get an offer, yet. I have it on almost equally solid intel that Kaj Sherman (a 7-0 265lb center) was also on campus this past week end. Sherman I am told had an offer on the table before the campus visit. UM main competition right now for Sherman is U Texas San Antonio who has become a landing spot for numerous North Idaho JC (where Sherman is from) products. Montana though is a lot closer to Mercer Island Washington where Sherman's family is from. There is talk on this board and some other internet outlets that the Griz have become very involved with & offered Joe Boyd a (6-9 forward/center), but I can not verify whether he was the other big guy in this week end. Boyd is a high school player and I was told the other big man was a JC.
I am told the Griz feel very good about the prospects of signing one of these big men. First to commit gets the scholarship I would guess.
As always all rumors.

I am hoping Sherman and Boyd want to be GRIZ. IF that were the case, I think we would have to make room for them. We are in dire need of post depth. It would make sense to release 2 players from scholarships. I have my idea and opinion of whom, but will not voice it here. I am sure a few of you can logically figure out who those would be.

I don't know if you watch basketball but the era of the big man is over. I don't think the defending NBA champion Heat even have a true center on their roster. The current NCAA champs were a very small team. They had one good big and one board eating 6'6" kid and a bunch of small guards. As a team they were much smaller than we were this year.
Two years ago we had one of the best centers to ever come through town. Our power forward was 7 feet tall and we had a couple nice bench guys. That team won 21 games and missed the big dance. The "small" team we had this year won 25 games, went to the tournament and was incredible fun to watch. Let's not fly into a panic and dump the lot of them because they are 3 inches shorter than you think they should be.

In an ideal world, no player should lose their scholarship, if they abide by rules set by the coaches. Unfortunately, in the world of college athletics, that is no longer the case. By the way, go reread my post. I have not said I support either of them being gone. My posts referenced reasons why they might be gone if a decision is made by the staff to do that. Before jumping my butt for those things, feel free to snoop and find out who tends to be late for practices, etc? Feel free to find out how little tolerance Wayne has for off the court issues. He has high off the court expectations for his players. It pains him to have any player have off the court issues. He treats those kids like his own kids, and family. Don't believe me, fine, I don't care.
Maybe vest some time into getting to know the program, coaches, and players more, then maybe you could understand where my thinking is coming from.
For starters...sorry I jumped you again dude. I do like your in site and opinions but as you may have noticed I am a big cheerleader for "our" guys. I hate this time of year when we start saying we need to ax some of them. Especially after this year, like I said this team was a blast to watch so I have become too attached to them I guess.mtgrizrule said:

As for Weber...Bolomboy is a future NBA guy. We don't match up with him and we never will but this being a team game means we can scheme ways to beat teams and players even if we don't have an exact counterpart for them. Personally I love small ball and running right at a team full of bigs. They will block a few shots and probably out rebound us but we will wear them out and smoke them on the free throw line. It all works out. Just different brands of ball.

I too like the style you are referring too. Wayne has yet to commit fully to that. As to why that is, your guess is as good as mine. Hard for me to question Wayne though, he is a great coach, and getting better every year.

I think the minute Tinkle signed Bradshaw, Emerson's days were numbered. Tinkle used a scholarship that opened up when a JC big man could not qualify for D-1 this fall to sign Bradshaw. That was a little fortunate this past January that he had a scholarship available. Now, though, he needs to sign a big man - basically to replace the one he lost this fall, where do you think that scholarship will come from? Most likely a perimeter player where he seems to have a log jam (over signed/committed) of players.
I know it looks like Tinkle will take a guards scholarship to sign a big man but in reality that guards scholarship was lost when he signed Bradshaw.

The discussion on the San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton boards seems to indicate that Boyd is down to those two schools. There is no mention of Montana. Of course this is simply message board discussion :roll: so who knows if there is any significance to this. One of the Cal State Fullerton posters said Boyd visited there in the last day or so.
