Vick crimes race based?

One more from the regional director of the NAACP....

"Some have said things to save their own necks," White said. "Michael Vick has received more negative press than if he had killed a human being."

White said he does not support dogfighting and that he considers it as bad as hunting.

"His crime is, it was a dog," White said.

Again GB I do have to consider the source, but come on folks. Vick has given up the fight, shouldn't you all do the same?

ML King must be rolling over in his grave.

Considering the amount of press generated and the amount of “lynch mob” mentality that is being displayed, it’s sad to think the “sport” of Dog fighting will go on like nothing happened after this blows over. Too much emphasis is being put on MV and not the dog fighting itself. MV is a product of his environment on many levels….He plays roles depending who is around or who may be watching. He’s been doing it for as long as he can remember. He’s been getting away with it using charm, good looks and absolutely incredible athletic ability. He isn’t the only one…many of the highest paid athletes in the world come from the other side of the street, many grew up as kids fighting dogs or whatever their particular thing was… just being too cute for words or to fail the class....cock fighting…thugging…drugs…beating up various women for years before killing the ex-wife and an acquaintance. I’m shocked that people are so shocked at this type of thing anymore. Money and fame doesn’t take the “down home” out of you. We, as a society, need to start making children responsible for their actions. Consequence for actions growing up….no matter the athletic ability…no matter if we win or lose the game….these kids need to be held accountable. They need to be kicked off the team or benched or jailed or whatever it freakin takes. I don’t care who your kid is. It absolutely amazes me on a local level, how many of these “athletes” get away with drinking and smoking pot, beating up Valedictorians claiming she was a narc, knocking out power and deflating the Athletic Club’s roof ….I’ll stop there. But we need them to play next game. Bottom line is this. If you want good role models for the future….stand up and be a parent/society member/citizen and nip it when you see it happen. If you’d rather burn a MV doll in effigy then by all means…as you were. Maybe someday you’ll actually know the person.

The NAACP guy has a point. I think some people in the black community are a bit enraged that Vick is being treated like he did the absolute worse thing in the world while Darrent Williams' killers are still running free in Denver and nobody seems to cares.

Also, in regards to the hunting comments, the "sport" is not something that many African-Americans do. It's not a racist statement, it's just culturally how it is. It shouldn't be surprising to hear these comparisions coming from Marbury or the NAACP and quite frankly I personally think hunting is, while not to the same degree as dogfighting, a pretty inhumane activity in itself.

Now I'm starting to sound like one of those damn PETA protesters. Shit.

Whether African-Americans hunt or not is irrelevant. Most African-Americans don't treat animals like this, much less organize dog fights, train dogs, then execute the non performing ones. I think the overhwelming majority of African-Americans are appalled at what Vick did.

GB1, i agree 100% about most African-Americans probably being completely appaled with Vick's actions. However, I am not surprised to see these same people (such as the NAACP) questioning why Vick is in such hot water but hunting is such a respected "sport".

The real crime is that the race card is played in virtually every high profile case involving a minority...

Being a minority doesn't give you the right to commit crimes...too often it turns up as a part of the excuse used for being stupid. Come to think of it, being a white middle-class male doesn't give you the right to commit crimes either-

Mr. White, I don't think so. Of course, the amount of coverage is ridiculous, but these days what isn't. Personally, despite all of the attention Vick's gotten, I'm still trying to recover from the "Paris Hilton starring in CAGED HEAT" barrage that may have caused some serious neurological damage to more than half of America.

Then again, I half expected Michael Vick to use the "it wasn't me, it was Ron Mexico" defense. Ron Mexico, where have you gone, a nation turns it's lonely eyes to you?

Why is Michael Vick being so "persecuted"? I believe in the saying "To whom much is given, much will be expected." He has been given a lot and people feel the right to expect a lot. Sorry but you don't get to benefit from your public image when it is convenient but then hide from it when it isn't. Vick has become very wealthy due to all of the attention slathered upon him for his atheletic accomplishments and when he is guilty of a crime, in this case multiple felonies, he gets to suffer the downside of all that fame. That's just the way it works (and should work). His downfall is not understanding that despite the lack of accountability he may have faced in the past, someday there will come a day of reckoning and for Vick that day has come. Claiming race discrimination in this instance cheapens the legitimate efforts to achieve racial equality.

if my BEST friend was involved, they would no longer be my friend. If John Elway or Joe Montana were involved, they would no longer be my favorite qbs of all time. If Jerry Rice was involved, he would no longer be my favorite WR of all time. Race has no bearing whatsoever.

Cruelty to animals is unforgiveable.

We hunt deer to eat them.
