Utah Valley State

When was the last time we one one of these tough [character] road games?

For being such a big basketball fan, it appears your IQ outside of UM has just been uncovered. Considering we just got physically abused by Duke this is a game to me that requires huge character and team guts because they just flew back across the country in basically a day to play a quality team. But the naysayers will have their groans. I for one expect a win, but we did not get it. There will be payback in Missoula on December 22nd. I will be waiting for a 15 point win then.

Tough loss
I liked how we battled back.
sounds like AJ gave us a spark ..when Stauds hit that last three to bring them with in three...I tought
we had a shot, but there was not enough time. Aj should be playing for CET
Tinks is nuts to be playing Banny Vanny in crunch time.
UVS is a good team and beat N. Colorado out of the gate...but now we have to face Santa Clara which almost upset Arizona today.

If this keeps up much longer ..I am gong to join the TINKS Basher club, because I know we have the
talent this year that only leaves one thing....COACHING !

Defense will be a problem for us all year. We do not have the quickness or athleticism underneath to compete with the better than average teams. But more important this team does not have the tennacity or the DNA to play tough defense. I see alot of layed back kids who are easy going and know how to chill. I can spot it as I have a son just like that who is layed back and does not have that competetive drive and he plays high school hockey. Go figure. Its baked in the body.

Jack McG carried the team for the first half. He accounted for half of the offense with 14 points. Then something happened. Not sure what. But I believe he only had one point in the second half.

Hm? Yea, meant to spell won, obviously. I got 1 hour of sleep last night... but how often do we win these type of road games? Ever?

Any of you self proclamined hoops "experts" care to opine on NAU, Weber State, and msu who are a combined 3-9?? UVST is 4-0, give them a little credit. They come to Missoula 12/22. Let's see where Tinks has his team then. In my opinion, that will be a lot better measuring stick.

You should do a little research on UVU and Coach Hunsaker's pedigree before you say the Griz just lost to a no-name. If UVU were in the Sky, they would be doing a fair amount of damage. This was not a loss to some "no-account" program.

Utah Valley is a very tough team to play at their place (as has been pointed out in this thread). They beat NAU earlier this season by 6 and Louisiana-Lafayette by 30 in their game before they played the Griz.

WashGriz - I've seen starting Johnson over CET suggested by a couple of people. Johnson is not a point guard though. Yes, he could play the point, but playing him at point would drastically reduce his scoring. CET has done a good job so far this year at point. He's a good defender and even though he may not put up huge numbers scoring, has a good assist to turnover ratio. Our offense does not run as well when CET is on the bench.

I do however agree that we need more minutes for Anthony Johnson. The guy provides quickness, the ability to create his own shot, and defense that we really need out there. I really think he should be starting.

As for Vassy Banny, he plays because of his defense and rebounding. He hasn't had many minutes so far this year, but I think as he gets more comfortable out there we will see what we saw in the scrimmage earlier this year. He has a nose for the ball. He's also a very physical player, which unfortunately can get him some fouls if the refs are being whistle happy. He's one of the newcomers which I expect will be really helping the Griz out by conference time.

McGillis had a great first half. I'm not sure what happened in the 2nd half. Hasquet had an OK game. 12 points, but only 4 rebounds. Our inside defense seemed kind of soft too... Having Qvale hurting did not help.

I agree with votb. Utah Valley would be very competitive in the Big Sky. Look at how they've done against the Big Sky in the past couple of years (5-3 against Big Sky opponents):

This Year (4-0 record so far):
Beat NAU by 6 (68-62)
Beat the Griz by 7 (82-75)

Last Year (15-14 record):
Lost to Portland State (in Overtime) by 7 (60-53)

2006-2007 (22-7 record):
Beat Montana State by 32 (69-37)
Beat the Griz by 17 (74-57)
Lost at Portland State by 2 (71-69)
Beat Montana State in Bozeman by 7 (60-53)
Lost at Idaho State by 14 (76-62)

UTVSU is a strong team. So is Santa Clara. I doubt this was a surprise to the coaching staff and the players, but the problem I am having is the fact that I believed this Griz team was going to do some great things this year. I'm not jumping ship, they can lose out the rest of the year and I will still be a fan. But it is disapointing, this team SHOULD beat mediocre to good college teams.
A win against Santa Clara I would definitely chalk up as a quality win.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, safe travels to all!

Downlow on UVU from a local...

UVSC now UVU (24,000 students - more than WSU or USU...creeping up on Utah):

They've only been a U for 6 months but they've been DI since 2003. They have been good every year.

4-0 right now with 2 big sky wins. 15-14 last yr, 22-7 the yr before, 16-14 for 2 yrs before that.

As an independent they basically play who they can not being in a conferece. Which sucks if your good and makes it hard to recruit knowing there is no chance at making the NCAA Tourney.

They even have already had an NBA player - Ronnie Price, Utah Jazz.

UVU has a good program and a great coach, former Weber player - Dick Hunsaker. Also, he was an assistant at Weber under Abegglan I think...

UVU is 2-2 with Weber even though there have been no games for 3 years.

I think if they were in the 'Sky they could easily compete for a title. I would love them to join but I dont know how they can get a DI football team.

2 years ago or last yr they had 2 close calls with Utah St, but lost both.

One day when BYU dares to play them they will be in for a treat - BYU and UVU are 3.4 miles apart. UVU has 24,000 and BYU has 32,000.

They never play, BYU is afraid.
