Almost decided against doing a thread this week. (I know, some of you would have probably preferred that.) With seven ranked teams Idle and a half-dozen others playing cupcakes or losers (and the usual no Big Sky slant), games that might work got a little thin. [See “Paytonlives ”FCS Week 4 … MEH” thread.]

Still there is some intrigue going into the weekend … so here goes.

We don’t really know about Tennessee-Martin. They were okay last year and this year they’ve played an NAIA and an FBS. So who really know how good they are? They are at home, so maybe they have a chance.

Same goes for Southern Illinois, which is also at home. They came within a point of beating Indiana on the road, and within a FG of SEMO, also on the road. So maybe finally getting to play at home will be the key. (Of course, most of us will probably be rooting for Liberty, but you never know.)

I know the Bryant at CC games looks to be a stretch, but Bryant was 8-3 last year and they’re undefeated this year … so, what the Hell!

With such slim pickings, I figured I could include at least one “losers bowl” -- so I included the Rhodie at Maine game so you could pick who might get their first win of the season. For that and the other non-ranked teams, I used a set of power rankings to pick the underdogs. Of course, as usual, I list the FBS team (which has not won a game) as the “over-dog” -- which they are, since two of their loses are to ranked FBS teams.

With such a mixed bag, I have allowed two picks per voter. Underdog on the left.

Bryant Univ has an excellent team this year. Beat Brown last week. I think beating CC is a stretch though!

Hmmm ... looks like a couple people want bragging rights. :)

One vote for Tenn-Martin over Jacksonville State, one vote for Samford over Louisville. At least T-Martin is playing at home, but Samford will be busy collecting a check $$$.

Cal Poly over MSU...I know it isn't on the list, but I think it is the only legitimate option this week. If MSU looks like they have on defense the last 2 times Cal Poly will win by a lot and hold the ball for 45 minutes. Prediction Cal Poly 38 MSU 28

Dang! Why couldn't I foresee a once-in-a-century (plus) upset and put it on here?

Thought about putting a comment over on the Penn-Villanova (upset! 24-13), but thought it would be funnier here. :yikes:

I know 'Nova lost their stud QB, but this loss could hurt their ranking in a major way. :o

Still ample time to vote. First "upset" matchup doesn't come on until 1:00 o'clock. (Jacksonville State at Tennessee-Martin.)

Also GO GRIZ! :egriz:

Liberty's gonna be coming off a high-much like us with NDSU. I can see them getting spanked by SIU by three touchdowns.

Liberty down 27-6 early in the 2nd half. They seem to have no energy.

Probably won't last, but James Madison has a 24-21 lead (and the ball) over FBS SMU, mid-way thru the 3rd quarter. (Can't stand JMU, but would still like to see an upset.)

Interesting. The three top vote getters were, indeed, the three games that ended up as "upsets." Of course, only the Southern Illinois win over Liberty will impact the polls. Also, the W&M vs Stony Brook and the Princeton vs Lehigh "under-dog" selections were based on power index numbers, which are generally not that predictive this early in the season.
