Upset Guesses (Oct 28)

As PaytonLives says, this is going to be “Bloodbath Weekend,” with six matchups between ranked teams. So, obviously, at least six ranked teams will lose this weekend. That made it pretty easy to make up a roster of possible upsets. You might also note that three of the “underdogs” are playing at home, so that’s a factor to consider.

However, just for the fun of it, I also tossed in the “losers bowl” between two teams that have one win between them … that being Missouri State, which beat the Murray State Racers (currently 2-5). That gives you a chance to decide if Indiana State can finally win a game.

As usual, underdog on the left, two choices allowed, and you can change your votes.

I agree about Indie State ... if only because they're on the road. And this is likely to be their last chance for a win this season. The rest of their schedule is tough (maybe not brutal, but tough):
vs #21 Youngstown State (3-4)
vs #12 Western Illinois (5-2)
at UNI (4-3) … enough votes to be “#28.”

About the only thing going for them (maybe) is that two of the three games are at home.

Don't usually follow up this early, but I was a bit surprised to see a couple of votes for UNH to upset JMU. With JMU at home, I really don't see it. So are those two real notions that an upset will happen, or people looking for "bragging rights" if it happens? I'm betting the latter.

I don't think we'll see any upsets in the games you listed. And I am hoping for as much, too. If #s 20, 21 and 22 all go down this week, and Montana beats Weber State, the Griz should move into the top 20 for the first time in what feels like a loooong time.

You could well be right ... and I agree it could be a good thing for the Griz. But I figured several of the games were a "pick'em." So I picked the home teams in two of the closer looking matchups: Western Illinois and Villanova.

Interesting. I see I have lots of company on the possibility that Western Illinois could "upset" SDSU: Two very evenly matched teams ... so we go with the home team.

But I'm a bit surprised that so many think that McNeese can go into Central Arkansas and win. Of course, that's what make these guesses fun.

Lot’s of interesting stuff coming this weekend. We know about the Big Sky, but it looks like the Southland has a crucial weekend too, with McNeese playing at Central Arkansas.

Of course, there are also crucial games in the MVFC. Example: If YSU can beat #16 Illinois State (good possibility, the waddle-birds are at home), they would be 4-4. After that they get Indiana State (0-7), SIU (4-3) and Missouri State (1-6) … giving them a good chance to go 6-5 and a decent chance to end at 7-4. At 7-4, they’re gonna get in. But 6-5 would not put them out of the running, since the committee has consistently put 6-5 MVFC teams in the playoffs. Of course, if YSU loses and goes 3-5, things get a lot tougher.

The intrigue is somewhat delayed in the CAA, with lots of tough games remaining before current conference leaders JMU (7-0, 4-0) and Elon (6-1, 4-0) face off in the final game of the season.

I'm going with Youngstown and McNeese. Youngstown because of the their defense, at home and McNeese because Central Ark. is still building their program.
