A break for the Griz?

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota center Maurice Walker has been suspended for six games for a violation of university policy.

The Golden Gophers made the announcement on Friday, a few hours before they opened the season against Lehigh. The Gophers did not specify which policies were broken.

It's a big setback for Walker, who worked hard in the summer to drop weight and get into new coach Richard Pitino's good graces.

When Pitino was hired to bring his up-tempo style to Minnesota, the 310-pound Walker figured to have a hard time fitting in. But Walker changed his diet and threw himself into grueling workouts to drop more than 60 pounds. Walker won't be eligible to rejoin the team until the second game of the Maui Invitational on Nov. 26.

Not a typo, I guess, as he is listed at 250 now. Wow, UMinn should have had him on the football's OL at 6-10, 310lbs and presumably good enough feet/quickness to play bball (and as a SO, would have had time to develop technique).

The Gophers went 2-0 during the exhibition portion of their schedule, defeating Cardinal Stritch 79-57 and Concordia-St. Paul 101-67. Junior guard Andre Hollins led a group of four players with double-digit averages at 13.5 ppg over the two contests. Maurice Walker was close behind at 13.0 ppg to go along with a team-leading 9.0 rbg. Austin Hollins averaged 12.5 ppg while Joey King finished with an average of 11.5. junior guard DeAndre Mathieu averaged a team-high 8.0 assists per game.

Looking at his stats from last year, he wasn't a big contributor with 2 rebs and 2.2 pts/game but looks like he did better in the exhibition games this year. Anything will help but Minnesota looks to be pretty tough overall for the Griz anyways. I think I would be very happy if the Griz start the season 3-2 with how tough the opening stretch is.
