I agree that Stauds works as hard as anyone and furthermore he seems to be a fine young man. When he delivered a hard foul to a LMU player today, he went to the free throw line to check on the LMU player. Nonetheless, against quick teams he struggles defensively. He got blown by a number of times against LMU. When his shot isn't falling his value to the team is greatly diminished.mtgrizrule said:I watched all 3 games on the internet. Bigskytv is much better for basketball than football thankfully. It really looked to me the GRIZ were dead tired, and LMU flatout had more energy than we did. They were able to rest more players last night against UND than we could against BSU. The BSU game took a lot of us, but we survived.
I too was and am curious as why Young seen so very little time against LMU. Did he get beat a few times or not hustle, or just not feeling well? Young is an impressive player and athlete. AJ needs a few players to help him out in scoring. I feel Young can indeed be our 2nd scoring option, scoring looks quite easy for the guy. He also is athletic to defend and rebound. I feel Young is well worth giving the time to grow, and see him through some mistakes.
As for Stauds, Tinkle says it time and time again, he brings so much more than what we see in the stats. Tinkle feels he can rely on Stauds to work hard, defend, be in the right place, and is our best post entry passer. This weekend showed me Tinks expects Stauds to shoot every open shot he gets, regardless if he is red hot or struggling. They want 10 shots per game from him, and Tinks is willing to stick to that with him. I really think Tinks wants him to know he does not have to worry about looking over his shoulder. Also the one guy most like Stauds is not playing yet, maybe Tinkle pulls Stauds some with Taylor available.
Qvale is a difference maker again this year defensively, but still needs more consistency on the boards. His offense looked rather impressive this weekend. I hope that continues, along with us feeding him.
McGillis does a solid job at the 4, despite being undersized. He makes up for height with jumping and quickness at the 4, ditto Banny, he also allows room in the paint for Qvale to work.
Selvig is a player that is hard to get a read on, maybe some of that is recovering from injury still. There is no doubt he has instincts and passing ability that are rare for a player his size, and our offense as a whole functions well when we use him right. Some of his passes are unbelievable. I do not mind him shooting jumpers, but he does not follow up on his shots, which as a basketball coach, drives me crazy. He also needs to get more physical defensively in the paint and on the boards on both ends. For his size, he is way too timid, which also is frustrating for me to see. I hope some of Ward's tenacity rubs off on Selvig. Speaking of Ward, he has good post moves, plays hard, but needs more patience when he is defended well. The kid has a bright future though.
Will Cherry is a stud athlete, defender, and fiece competitor. Tinkle looks to be willing to let him play through typical Freshman growing pains, and it will be beneficial by season's end. His defense alone lessens the burden on AJ, which allows AJ to be fresher for crunch time. His weakness are perimeter and ft shooting, which both can be improved. FT wise, I really am surprised a coach did not correct his biggest problem a long time ago. His upper body, and in turn the ball are all over the place. IF that is not corrected he will lucky to ever be better than 60% ft shooter.
Finally, the strength of the GRIZ this year are AJ, depth, and defense. We need a lot of work on rebounding, and ft shooting other than AJ.
It will be a good year if everyone stays healthy and works on their weaknesses.
nice post....lots of info not available elsewhere...thanks.mtgrizrule said:I watched all 3 games on the internet. Bigskytv is much better for basketball than football thankfully.
