U.S. PETA Calls on Universities to Get Rid of Live Animal Mascots After Texas' Bevo Charges at Georgia's Uga

Personally I think the live mascot thing is just stupid. Still, I think PETA is making a whole lot of something out of nothing here. Seems like Bevo probably costs quite a bit to haul around. Money that could be spent elsewhere. Not sure how many people get excited about seeing a live mascot!! Oh look, look, a bulldog! Wow.
First, I agree that PETA is -- as usual -- making a whole lot of somethin' out of nothin'. And just to be clear, most live sports mascots are about as pampered as any animal in existence. (I know, PETA thinks anything besides a "natural" setting is unethical.) Another reality is that some live mascot programs are designed for animal preservation. (Go look at the aviary at Auburn University ... worth visiting).

But the other reality is that such programs are, as you observe, expensive and not likely to be a big WOW for fans. Sorry Georgia – parading an ungainly bulldog onto the field is pretty low-key as a warm-up. And a lot of others are even lamer than that.

There are exceptions. Some memorable ones would include (1) mentioned earlier, Traveler the USC horse, and his/her rider which, by many accounts pumps up the crowd and the players; (2) Florida State, with another horse, where the rider stabs the flaming spear into the logo; (3) the Sooner Schooner, raced onto the field for Oklahoma home and bowl games; (4) "Ralphie" the Colorado buffalo that's galloped onto the field. Hokey as these might seem (to some), these offer a certain level of pageantry and action ... and make sense. (Grizzlies being AAA-list predators, it's hard to imagine anything UM could cook up.)
What about Monte falling off a Harley?

Ridiculous. That was awesome to watch. .. if that Longhorn would have hooked that worthless bulldog, could you imagine the controversy then. But what did they expect, Cattle do not like canines

Just a another opportunistic variation of the liberal mantra "..wouldn't it be worth it if it saved just one life...' albeit a drooling lop-eared dog.

Uga is a huge deal at Georgia. I was in Athens for a game right after an Uga died. I was amazed at the genuine concern among fans.

There's a mausoleum in the entrance of the stadium where the team enters. All of the Uga's are there. There is a shrine for them. Their likenesses are in bronze, and their football team records are posted. See the records in this link.

UM should look at this tradition for former eGriz posters. I can see the bronze statue of Dill with his hand crammed up his own ass enshrined near the north entrance.

My wife spent a year in grad school at Georgia. There's no question that they love that dog -- and why not? By all accounts, he's a nice, well-behaved animal. Another point: Near as I can tell, the mascot does not cost the university anything. Each in turn has belonged to a family that's been Georgia fans forever, and they handle the costs, including his room (with them) at away games.

That seems to the case, BTW, for several of the live mascots. Some off-campus fan group pays for everything. Sure the money those boosters raise could be used for other stuff, but from what I read, many people donate specifically to support the live mascot.

I have been up close and personal with Bevo. A friend (and huge UT guy) got them to bring Bevo to his HOUSE for his daughter’s HS graduation party. Bevo sat in the back yard and we all took pics with him and got to sit on him....he’s super gentle and super calm. Guess he just didn’t like the fucking dog. And as it turned out, it was a harbinger of things to come for Georgia...lol

I say bring a f'ng Grizzly Bear to the stadium!!!

I can tell you from personal experience, bears & snakes are pretty the same kind of acquaintances as longhorn cattle & bulldogs. It’s going to have to be one of the other.
