For the non-BCS bowls schools get screwed - "Teams are required to provide a corporate sponsor, purchase a minimum number of tickets, and stay at a selected hotel for a minimum stay."

The reason they lost money is that they only sold 2700 of the 17,500 tickets. Do you really think if UM was in the Fiesta Bowl Griz fans would only buy 2700 tickets? I bet it would be closer to 40,000.

According to financial records from the Fiesta Bowl, UConn incurred $4.3 million in expenses, while receiving a payout from the Big East of $2.5 million for making it to the prestigious Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game against Oklahoma.

In addition, the cost of traveling to Glendale, Ariz.., for the game totaled $685,195, while UConn also spent a total of $460,941 on meals and lodging for the team, administrators, cheerleaders and the band.

So did they have to spend 4.3 million??? This was the Universities choice and you spin it as a reason to stay in the B league... keep trying.

Did YOU read the entire story? It says that West Virginia couldn't even sell 10,000 of their 17,500 tickets for the Fiesta Bowl in 2008, for a $1 million loss. Virginia Tech lost $2.2 million after playing in the Orange Bowl in 2009 (doesn't make mention of ticket sales).

And of that $4.3 million expense you mention $3 went to unused tickets, $.69 for travel and $.46 for food and lodging. So that's $4.15 of the $4.3 million total right there, I doubt you are going to shave as much of that off as you would like to think.

And you are delusional if you think UM could sell 40,000 tickets.

(and no matter what the Chamber of Commerce says, Phoenix is hardly a hot winter destination).

So what is? It was 80 here today with golf, a spring training or ASU baseball game every afternoon. If you're right, a very large number of snow birds I see down here have sure been fooled.

Pretty hot for the last week of Feb., even here. I spent four years in Tempe a long time ago; was at the first Fiesta Bowl; a nice ASU win over Florida St.

I remember when I was making my picks for the office pool of doing a double take when I saw that matchup, definitely a WTF moment. So that pot of gold coming from the broadcast rights has a price tag of a stiff ticket allotment. A very sobering thought for those caught up in the allure of the FBS. Moral of the story - be sure you have the fan base to support the team wherever it may be called to travel to. I don't know who the bigger idiots were here- the bowl organizers for extending the invitation to an eastern team, or the eastern team for accepting the invitation.

In reality the bigger idiots are all the griz fans who are still talking about moving up. give it a rest

What are the BCS Bowel's payout? $17.5 million? IMO the teams that make it to those bowels should have their expenses covered either by the bowls or their conferences - losing money should not even be an option
