Tyrone Holmes

I haven't yet gotten to see this kid play live, but based on Brint's and Neighbor's practices/scrimmage tweets, he is having a great camp as a true freshman. Not sure how much action he sees against the 1st string o-line, but still sounds like he's making a good impression. Just noticed on his roster profile that he was a state champion shot putter and 4th in the high hurdles the same year. How often do you see that?? Looking forward to seeing him play.

He's been out against both 1s and 2s - doing really well.

I sat with a few graduated seniors and they were talking him up, earlier I had a player's parent ask about him. When even the O-line is impressed with his play - that's a statement.

He's a pure pass rusher right now, run support is shaky, tackling isn't the greatest, he's not an every-down DE. But when it's a passing down... hooo boy, look out.

A friend of mine seen the scrimmage, and a few practices. He texted me, Holmes will as impactful in his career, if healthy, as Jared Allen, and Kroy were. Any thoughts about that? I told him, Holmes is too young to make that kind of statement. He then reminded me, he called it for each of them, by the time Allen and Kroy were upperclassmen.

He's very mobile and has good instincts. He's not even close to being his listed weight of 265. He needs more strength. He's a big kid, so will get bigger and stronger. He has the potential to be a great player for the Griz. I think he will contribute this year. I met him and his family briefly this summer, and he and his family seem like terrific people. His brother is big too.

Hmm... tough call, Daly is really just a pass-rush "specialist" right? By that definition yes he would be but I'd have to go back and watch some clips on how Daly rushes, I thought he was more of a power guy that would bull-rush and use his upper-body strength to shove blockers aside. Holmes is more pure speed, players on the team (including Olinemen that have faced him) compare him more to Severin Campbell.

That video honestly doesn't really do him justice, he's added some serious explosiveness when the ball is snapped. He comes out of his stance so quickly many of our tackles have not even been able to keep up with him.

As I've been told he's real smart in reading the O-line as well and he's been able to quickly tell if there's been an error in blocking assignments. He's been making the tackles he matches up against pay for their mental errors.

Apparently Oregon State was after him pretty hard... feels good to know that he chose us over the Beavs. :thumb:

I think he was offered early by OSU and WSU, but they dropped off on their recruitment on him because of other signings. I remember reading an article that he really wanted to be at OSU and did recieve a good deal of interest from them, but I don't think its accurate to say he chose us over the Beavs. It does feel good to steal him away from his committment to PSU though :thumb:

Regardless, we signed two guys in Holmes and Kidder, who are going to give us 4 years of high level production. I see them both as being BCS level talents and its a testament to the staff that we were able to land them.

The only thing he has in common with Daly is the "speed rush" label. Daly is an undersized DE who has good quickness and is very strong. Holmes has that prototypical DE size and has speed but has a lot of work to do in the weight room. I think Holmes will be a very well rounded and dominant every down DE for us when he can add some strength and learn how to play the run at this level.

From what I've seen, more like a Dane Fletcher, but with speed.

In a couple of years, the DL of the Griz that includes Kidder, Holmes, Wagenmann, Tokai and Crittendon is going to be like the "Fearsome Foursome" of the FCS. We just got of it, that's all.

I had the pleasure of growing up with Tyrone Sr, his brother, sister and parents. Unfortunately, we lost the father of Tyrone Sr at an age far to young. Thurman was a mentor of mine. My Sunday school teacher and assistant pastor at my home church in Southern Oregon. There family are quality God fearing people.

TJ is exactly the type of person and athlete that Montana is looking for especially during our rebound. His talent and athleticism speaks for itself and is evident that he along with a few other special guys from this freshman class are headed toward maintaining the successful Griz Legacy that has been set by the people who have come before them.

Looking forward to watching this generation of young men grow and extend the championship tradition...its why we as parents are proud that they are in Missoula! These kids wont run from the fight...they will run TO it!

Maul 'Em
Go Griz

Don't forget Ginn. He looked very good today. He needs to get his head right, but if does, he will be a force!

Looks like you are getting an early jump with the parents, eh Greenie? Why don't stay away from the program. You are part of the cancer we are trying to excise. Your continual apologist attitude the past few years trying to make excuses for the criminal element around this program is nauseating. I hope the new coaching staff has figured you out, and stays far away from your incessant meddling and "support".

Easy now easy Growler, it is true Holmes is a force along with Ginn. We are coming I tell ya, we are coming!

Didn't really but I was hoping he'd develop; especially since I've heard he redshirted last year due to an injury. Hope he's 100% I wouldn't allow anyone on the field if I was on the coaching staff that isn't cleared 100 % by the medical staff.
