TSN Preseason Poll

fltheadgriz said:
Well yeah I do have a problem with GSU and also any Ivy League teams since they can never be in the post-season.
I am fine with being 20 also. I though the Grizz would be much lower due to last years record.
When the Grizz beat App State, it will be interesting to see how much of a jump in the polls they get.

Top 10 no doubt

Down years happen! Northern Iowa went 5-6 last year, just like the Griz did-they're in the top twenty! No Cat fans have problems with them being there. Look at the Bobcat history before Ash:

1978-81 Sonny Lubick 4 21-19-0 .525
1982 Doug Graber 1 6-5-0 .545
1983-86 Dave Arnold 4 18-29-0 .382
1987-91 Earle Solomonson 5 15-40-0 .272
1992-99 Cliff Hysell 8 41-47-0 .466
2000-06 Mike Kramer 7 40-43-0 .481

Boy what great tradition! Incredible!
The past is the past. Do you realize how much the world has changed since 1978. Everything is upside down. Just since Obama became President, America has become a shadow of it's former self in decline. The Griz record went south and the Bobcats are on top. Going forward we will see much more parity in the BSC. Should be interesting. Pre-season polls do not mean a thing other than that it is what people think of your program. The test is when the games are played!

The Griz having a couple poor seasons is Obama's fault.

Now I've heard it all.

Well you can't blame it on Bush because he wasn't in office!

How can that be? Everything that's happened during Obama's term has been Bush's fault. Just ask Obama....

We won't jump 10 spots by beating the number 12 team when we are already 20. Not saying we won't be a top 10 team by mid season, but it won't happen in one week.

There is only one Z in Griz! Jesus H Christ!

 I like how cat fans this year keep on mentioning "recent" history as their argument.

Despite barely pulling off a close win against one of the worst griz teams (record-wise) in the last few decades, the cats still don't even have a winning streak against the griz currently.

Is 2011 ancient history? When the griz had 11 wins, a beatdown in Bozo and were a 3 point semi-final loss on the road away from another NC appearance?

You have to go back to 1984 to find a cat team that even made it to the semis. Talk about ancient history! (Yeah, those same cats teams "during Obama's era" that they keep beating their chests to haven't even accomplished what the 2011 griz team did...aand they have a losing record against the griz during that recent span, as well.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the TSN poll is independent from the NCAA picking the playoff brackets, much like the coaches poll. I remember a couple years ago NDSU was really good, but weren't eligible due to just moving up to FCS, but they were ranked.
Correct. Certain ratings (such as SOS) are used, but rankings/polls are not allegedly referenced. That doesn't mean subconsciously they might still influence a voter, though. Regardless, by season's end the polls are pretty similar to the best eligible teams remaining and subsequently, the committee's selections anyways.

the basic criteria used in the selection
of at-large participants are (1) won-lost record, (2) strength-of-schedule, and (3)
eligibility and availabilitiy of student-athletes for the NCAA championship
http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/champ_handbooks/football/2010/10_1_football.pdf

However, regarding the SOS rating:
approved a new ratings system to gauge the quality of a team’s schedule. It will take into account games with Football Bowl Subdivision, FCS and Division II opponents.

Oh, and remember D-IIs count this year.

So, since the polls/rankings don't determine the playoff teams, I see no harm having ASU or GSU in the rankings if they've earned it. The polls are just for boasting rights for the fans and the team, IMO.

(ASU had votes in the FBS AP poll a few years back, but had no shot of actually making a bowl.)

This "poll" is hideous (horrible/appalling).

Last seasons records are the main factor in ranking, which doesn't mean squat for this year. Let's play the games and then look at this "poll" (joke) at the end of this season, shall we?

Speak for yourself. :thumb:

Since App State is ineligible for the post-season and moving up, why would they really be ranked?
Would that take away from another team trying to make the playoffs?

Actually, it would help. Having them ranked would increase the SoS for any team that plays/beats them. If you guys beat them, and they are ranked, that would be better than beating an unranked App team, no?

Exactly. If we beat them, we should see a good rise in the polls the following week.

Aren't we about 5-5 over the past decade? Pretty even Steven.
