Tracking Selvig's 2010-11 Season

After the LBS game and then again after EWU I got to thinking about Derek Selvig and "what happened"? He's a vital part to this team's success, yet in some of these recent big losses his stats have shown to be really low.

I put together a fast chart, tracking his points in each game and rebounds, it's incredibly streaky as you'll see.

Derek obviously isn't the post-up and play low guy like Qvale is, he can play the whole court and in a lot of his bigger games he's taken big advantage over slower and less athletic power-forwards. He can beat guys below but also on the perimiter, also when he's "on" his passing game is a thing of beauty.

I don't expect an answer on here from most egrizzers, I'd think that mostly Derek, the team, and the coaches would be the best people to asnwer - "what's going on?" with Derek. I hope they can get him back on track, when he's playing well it makes the Griz such a tougher team to beat.

Sorry for the horrid quality, I did this in excel and then re-sized it in photobucket. The blue line is points, the red line is rebounds

Now THAT is interesting. It goes along with what I was thinking. Don't know why but he just seems not be in any of the games, like his heart isn't into it...Maybe, after playing and being so involved with basketball for so long, he is just tired of it...who knows? One thing is certain, he is not going to be the guy to build a strong team around next year. Interestingly enough, this time last year, the Griz were on everyone's mind with the strong recruiting class that included Kamar....not hearing much now....I hope that loss at LB State was not a recruitment killer. This team is foundering and I hope Tinkle can straighten it out...

I think Derek needs his dad to ride his arse. When his dad came over to a couple games, Derek averaged close to 22 points and six rebounds if I recall correctly.

For the first couple of seasons I thought of Selvig as the Glassman. He had great skills but was often injured, seemed somewhat fragile. This year however, it mostly seems in his head. Every third or fourth game is a monster, then he seems to turn invisible for a coulple of games. Might be disinterested or it might be something else. I remember watching him being guarded on the perimeter by the smallest guy on the court, might have been LBS, and not shooting over him. Sometimes it seems he doesn't realize how tall he really is.

It's not skills and it's not physical ablility holding him back.

I think Selvig is streaky, but in the last few games I feel it had more to do with the defense of the other teams. Long Beach State had obviously done their homework. Double team Qvale and don't let Selvig get the open kickout for the three was executed to a tee. Eastern watched and essentially did the same thing. Any other griz as we know wasn't much of a concern from outside.

What I don't understand is why Selvig fakes and drives everytime someone comes at him. At seven feet he could shoot the three anyway. He is passing up shots. He only shoots the three when he is very open.

Tinkle should suspend all other practice except shoot ten thousand three balls each. If as some of you say Pflu should teach how to hold on to the ball, then Tinkle should teach them how to shoot.

I like the kid. He is a hell of a player. Not one e grizzer could hold his shirt. Plays his heart out each game. :|

He does have a serious injury that nags at him off an on. Undisclosed.

Your insulting grilling of him is bull. Not accurate, and most of you decide he is not great in games we lose but can't remember his outstanding 3 point shot stats over-all. Simple fact. Good player! :thumb:

I think part of the reason you aren't hearing much recruitment info is because mslacat is mia, or just not interested in giving us info anymore.

I haven't seen many b-ball games this year, read a lot of box scores however. Some players have been missing in action in a few games (so to speak), other players have been missing the whole season unfortunately.

However I was HIGHLY impressed with Selvig's DEFENSE in the away game at EWU that I watched on TV. If any of you missed that, you better watch the game again, great (super) defense by Selvig. He gave a clinic.

Selvig is really talented, I too would like to see him take over the game more at times--he's good!

Long Beach State coach Dan Monson compliments the Montana players
at about the 2:00 minute mark.

Selvig plays soft. He also fails to shoot with confidence. I agree with the poster who stated that Selvig puts the ball on the floor too much. He get a pass, and has a brief moment to tee-it-up and shoot the three. But he generally hesitates too long, then when the defender guards him, he tries to become a point guard and dribble the ball, generally losing it. He is also soft on rebounding. The kid is a pure shooter, who seems reluctant to let-it-fly.

Is it too late to read Selvig a few of barryisawinnah's posts about him from the Weber and UNC boards?

BTW you guys have the softest 7 footer in D1 basketball in Selvig. That kid is straight up afraid to bang down low. 7 feet tall and averages 5 boards a game, that's embarrassing in a conference when you're the tallest guy every single night. What a joke. Kid thinks he is JJ Reddick, pulling up from 3 and shooting 3s off the dribble. The kids soft, just like the grizz are soft. Step your game up Montana, you're going to need it.

I know what you guys are trying to do with Selvig, my point is that isn't that efficient. I'm also willing to bet that if he wasn't such a p*ssy that you guys who wouldn't be trying to do that with him, but he doesn't have the nuts to man up and play down low, so you guys are forced to basically have a 7 foot swingman who doesn't exactly light it up. Outside of Quale, you guys are soft. Can't wait till tonight.

How do you not understand that Selvig is a P*SSY?

That's just a sample of the fine work offered by winnah off the UNC board.

Mount Everett, if you are suggesting that I wrote that B.S. about Selvig on their board, you are a pin head. I would never make classless comments about one of our players. I have been critical of Selvig playing soft, as well as thinking he is a point-guard and dribbling way too much (note that he had 5 turnovers himself last night). But, I still like the kid, and am a big supporter of all of these kids. Too bad pedestrian Griz fans are incapable of constructively criticizing a player or coach, for fear they will labeled a bad fan. Contrarily, I call it like it is.

Can your flip-flopping be anymore obvious? How can you be a big supporter/fan/ or like a kid when he/team "has no heart"? You make zero sense. People who have "no heart" are quitters. This griz team hasn't even come close to that.

I don't think Everett thinks you are Whinna.......He is implying that you and whinnah are two peas in a pod spooning that whispers sweet nothings to each other..........Your old, I would expect your comprehension and problem solving skills to shine through a touch more. Just because I think you are like David2 doesn't mean I think you are him.......Are you (Growler) smelling what I am stepping in?
