Tough loss, but the guys played their hearts out; very proud of them

Pure stat comparisons of QB's in SS game.

Brown started 0-5, I believe. 51.6%. Then was 16-26 for 141 with 1 TD and no picks. That's 61.5% Us his 16-26, Brown's efficiency was 119.78%

Johnson was 6-10 for 60%. He threw for 285 yards, with 2 TD's and 3 picks.

The main SS qb was 52.7%. the other guy was 2-4, or 50%. 120.71 efficiency for main guy.

The SS QB's were 52.5% in completion percentage.

The Griz QB's were 53.67% in completion percentage.

Griz - 4.5 yards per catch
Sac - 7.5 yards per catch
Griz - 186 yards passing, 1 TD
SacSt - 299 yards passing, 2 TDs

Griz - 4.5 yards per catch
Sac - 7.5 yards per catch

Brown only started looking better when he switched to almost exclusively dump off passes. No passes beyond 10 yards (or very, very few). Man does that make it easier for a defense.

Yes. Except for the train wreck drive in OT...

Coaches failed to adjust to loss of Johnson and being on road with a lead.
To run 90+ offensive snaps was a major error.
Put short road roster in a bind. Week before against Idaho Griz ran 58 offensive plays, because Idaho shorten the game by using time clock.
All plays in fourth quarter should not have been played the game should have ended with less than 70 offensive plays.
To snap ball continually with 25+ seconds on play clock is dumb with a lead, second QB, and defense playing lights out.
Quick snap and fast pace has it’s place, it killed Griz at Sac.
Stit would consider high snap count a win. Dumb

This very good post by wbtfg is too good to be buried elsewhere. See the highlights in particular.

I think this was the first Griz game I watched start to finish this year and I have to say I came away impressed. They showed a lot of guts after losing Johnson.

The OL was much better than what I was anticipating. Osmo was impressive at RB...he ran extremely hard.

did Bergen injure his finger/hand on that punt return interference? I didn't seem him come back in after that play.

Offensive play calling I thought was really good considering the circumstances.

Obviously "the call" was terrible and the BSC should issue some type of statement on Monday about how big of a miss that was. That said....it was interesting the tv commentators didn't really take issue with the call and they agreed it was inconclusive. I thought it was obvious he was clearly out.

All in all, respect to your guys, they could have folded up the tents after QB1 went out, but they came out and fought their tails off."

I was really impressed with the tough running of Knight and Ostmo. They each had a couple times they were able to get away, but for the most part they were asked to run into brick walls every play and they did so with force. I think getting our RBs into some open space may be a good goal for the next game, but I would give them an A+ for old fashioned ground and pound this game. Our running game is definitely a strength that we need to highlight more for sure.

Yes, good observation on how tough the backs were and how they got extra yardage on almost every play. I thought they had some good initial too, but SS were then make a good play several yards down field. Ostmo loss 4 yards. Knight 0, Brown 1. Total of 5 for UM. The SS backs lost 1, 4 and 2.

I'll take Knight's 22 for 61, for only 2.8 per carry. 54 carries by Griz. 31 by SS.

Interested on your take on Harris got only getting 2 carries. He wasn't hurt (played on KO return team). He was in on only one series got 2 carries for 9 yards I think. He just seems to have another gear that Knight doesn't this year. I'm not trying to knock Knight or Ostmo, in fact I thought Ostmo was an all out beast in the Sac game, just find it hard to believe in certain down/distance situations Harris might have an edge over the Knight version 2022 being faster and not as easy for Sac to make those plays several yards downfield.

Side note: I don't see all three of the backs used in the game coming back next year, not enough carries to go around, no way they are all happy campers and I think Gillman will be added in the mix next year too, he seems legit.

Good observation, as well. Yes, Harris got a nice opening on one play and then they ran him right up the middle like Knight and Ostmo and took him immediately out. . .he got crushed. He is just too small and light to be expected to do that ground and pound up the middle work. Knight can do it, but his game is really highlighted best in the open field. I think he and Harris are by far the most elusive guys out there. . . if you are talking about "make you miss" type of backs. I have heard Knight is faster by a bit. Knight 2022 may be better than 2019, but we have really only seen him used in the inside zone. . .pound it up the middle. . .formations. I think we should open up the running game and focus on the best talent we have. I suppose that could be subjective, but I find Knight to be the guy that can do it all. . .ground and pound, catch, speed, make you miss, block, etc. The other guys all have some parts of that, but Knight has it all. The three back rotation is kind of annoying at this point. . .and doesn't allow the RBs to get into a rhythm. . .which is important. Having said that, it was refreshing to see the coaches focus on just two backs this game. However, I wish they could use them a little more creatively. That straight up the middle stuff was nice, and very old school, but it really should not be used every single time. Sac State was stacking the box and filling hard with their linebackers. This left a perfect opportunity for outside runs and passes in the middle by our TEs and RBs. . .or even shallow slants from the receivers. Anyway, what do I know? I thought both Ostmo and Knight did what they were asked to do very well. . .and both were beasts. They were the strength of the offense on Saturday. Time to open them up for more opportunities.

Some good comments. See highlighted part of your comment at the end. I agree.

Hauck says the o-line played well and was the most physical since he's returned to UM. He really liked how tough the 2 backs were. The D played very well. Too many plays just didn't go our way. More will go our way in the future. He likes this team more than any team he was every coached.
