OK, I'm going to say it. We struggled on offense with a freshman QB for whom the college game has yet to slow down for him. That will come. Not our biggest worry.
But we lost this game on defense because of poor coaching on the defensive preparation side, poor game plan, and lack of serious adjustments.. A least one snap every set of downs, the Hornets snapped the ball with the defense still trying to get into position. We were slow on the back 8 because because we got the Stitt kicked out of us. That's right, they had shifts and motion on almost every play and we had a guy chasing the motion guy across the field. Did you notice they changed wideouts/slots almost every down? Did you notice how many plays they had in the game? Classic Stitt offensive wear the defense out theory, well executed by Sac State.
We should have had a hot line to the booth as our group in the north end zone was regularly calling out what the play was going to be based on the personnel, down and distance, and we were usually correct. Incredibly, #12 was erratic when under pressure with his throws, but was rarely under pressure unless we blitzed.
We got beat by a team that was disciplined and better prepared--you know, the team that usually wins.
