Torre's rumored staff

Yahoo! Sports is reporting (from LA Times "intelligence") that Joe Torre's staff search is centering on four guys. To wit:

Don Mattingly as either bench coach or hitting coach.
Larry Bowa as either bench coach or 3B coach
Rick Honeycutt as pitching coach
Mariano Duncan as 1B coach

Honeycutt and Duncan are were on the previous Dodger staff and would be kept for continuity purposes. The waffling on Mattingly's and Bowa's potential roles beg the question of whether the positions not filled by these men would be filled by others to be named later, or if Mattingly/Bowa would be dual-hatted. The rumor-mongering is also ignoring the bullpen coach position.

I suppose we have until Feb to hash all this stuff out, but if this is true, Torre has the basis of an outstanding staff if egos don't get in the way. Although I STILL say that The Bulldog would have been a MUCH better choice.

Remember, this is all speculation at this point. Anything is possible until contracts are actually announced, which could take a while. Besides, while Yahoo! was where I picked this up, the ultimate source was the LA Times, and I wouldn't trust that fishwrap as far as I could chuck it.

He's been offered the job but hasn't accepted or declined it yet due to "personal reasons".

its just nice to see the Dodgers possibly returning to the 80s dominance...i thought they had a real shot at the start of this past year...with all they did in the offseason. if they get ARod or Santana in free agency, i will not only pick them for the pennant, but for the series
