Too Deep?????

I was at the game the other night @ Utah Valley with about 20 other Griz fans, and I was shocked by A) The minuites that were given to Freshmen, and B) How deep our team is.

PG - Ellis needs to be running the point for us. He is our best ball handler, and our best 1 on 1 defender. He barely played at all it seemed the other night because of the increades minuites of Martin, Rundles, Staudacher, and Swift. I think that Rundles is our future, and Staudacher is going to be a great player for us, but they ate up a ton of minuites the other night, while Ellis, Martin, and Swift sat.

G- Swift started for us the other night, and I thought he did a fine job. His defense has gotten better, and he is more comfortable with the ball in his hands. With he, Staudacher, Martin, and Mays all playing the position, where are the minuites going to go?

F- This is by far our biggest log jam of talent. Dloughy, and Hasquet are our starters. You have 6 guys that can all play these 2 foward positions when you add in Chase, Sharp, Chavez, and Mayes! We didn't even play Chavez the other night which was unbelievable! Chase from my view is a good banger inside, but his size could get him in to trouble with other bigs. He got blocked twice the other night by taller defenders.

C- This is the only position that we have decided right now. Strait needs the ball in the post. We went away from that the other night, and it cost us.

I love our team, but we need to start making some decisions on who is going to step up and fill these starter spots and demand minuites. The other night we went 10 deep, and that is with out the play of Chavez and Mays.

I think we will be fine but I see our rotation being
PG-Ellis
G-Swift
F-Dloughy
PF- Hasquet
C-Strait
6th man- Martin

Go Griz!

The problem I have with all the depth is that it will cause troubles with the teams chemistry earlier in the season. We all know that we have players that can play at a high level but that doesnt mean that your team is going to be well off. They need to develop some leaders, and develop chemistry before they do anything else.

You can see this probelm occuring at North Carolina tonight. They have probably the deepest team in the country but beyond Hansbrough its a toss up of who is going to play for them. Winthrop is a vetern group and has recently given teams fits.

I see our sucess hinging on the chemistry we build and that will come later on in the season

SLC, well said. Too deep! That is what i've been saying for a month now. Tinks needs to make some clear decisions right now with whom he wants go with. You can't just have everyone play a few minutes here and there, no one will ever find their niche in this team. I want an 8-9 man rotation at the most. Right now I think he's pretty set at 10 without Chavez and Mayes, 2 seniors who i know some people want to see get time. So I'm not sure if he's really at 12 or 10, cause i know i want chavez to play

Ellis
Martin
Dloughy
Hasquet
Strait

Swift
Chase
Chavez

and maybe Rundles if the specific game requires him.

Disclaimer: havn't seen the guys play this year so my opinon could change quite a bit.

from what i can tell, admittedly from afar, chavez makes a big contribution every time he comes into a game. isn't he averaging close to a point per minute when he's in? he also snags a fair number of rebounds.

I like Chavez but noticed last year it only takes him 5-6 minutes to get 3 fouls. That might be why his minutes are limited.

Chavez had a nice game last night. He didn't play against Utha Valley for reasopns not disclosed by Tinks, cited as "personal reasons". Mike will be a great contributor this season. The depth of the team will pay huge dividends again this season.
