Tommy Mellott is down

ABQ's sober take on the Tommy hit: for whatever reason all year I'm seeing the refs let that play go without a flag. It seems last year it would have been flagged. I don't think it was a late hit or a cheap hit based on on how this has been called this year.

His head bounced off the tampon really hard, and he suffered concussion. The irony is he did exactly what he was instructed to do and give himself up to save the hit. Really sucks for the kid. If he would have done his usual forward collision, he would have likely stayed in the game perfectly healthy.

So what was the last word on the injury?

he looked absolutely punch drunk. His head really bounced off the surface, I would not be surprised if he misses more than a week due to concussion protocol.

My thought too. That looked about as bad it gets, short of knocking the "victim" out cold.

Thanks for posting Payton. It was real scary. Weird play. I didn’t like it but what you expect going to White Trashville…

We won’t have home for 2-3 weeks is my guess.

Like any player who is injured, I wish him nothing but the best and a speedy recovery.

Also felt bad for the psu player late In the GRIZ game. That looked bad, and I was so relieved to see him get up and walk off. We too often forget these are kids playing a violent sport. Prayers of safety to them all.

I didn’t see the play because I was at the youth sports fields all day watching the Griz on my phone when I could (youngest daughter got yanked after two by rule after six Ks. 1.13 ERA on the season, no big deal. I’m not too proud or anything). Sounds like the hit was dirty, and that blows. Hope he’s doing well and will be ready.

Hope Tommy recovers soon. I watched the first half or the Tampon and just could not watch the dumpster fire field any longer!

Any update today?

Ive gone back and forth.

Was the hit dirty?? Not sure, he wasn't down
Did it need to be made? No he was obviously on his way down

I saw it during their game. The hit was not "dirty".

As our cat fan previously posted it may have been called in some cases. He slid feet first, two of the defenders coming up landed on his legs/lower torso. It would have been a bit ticky / tac for a penalty call there.

It was just damn unfortunate. His head snapped back and hit HARD. Then he scared the hell out of everyone being knocked out for soooo long. I believe I read it was a full five minutes he was out. When he finally woke, stood up, and then he walked off he was swaying with noodle legs. With the severity of it, I have to believe this will keep him out for at least a week or more. Feel really awful for the kid. Hope he can fully recover. :ugeek:

Cat presser

Vegan stated that TM was sliding based on the Safety in front of him and really did not see the guys on the side coming in.
He also stated that he did not feel it was dirty (my words) but that it was part of the game (his words).
TM will be out vs UC and he hopes back in 2 weeks.

(My words) As a coach it's hard. They need him but concussions build off of each hit. I hope they take their time and do not rush him, if the rush him it might end up being career ending.

I don’t think it was dirty at all. Tommy is blazing fast and was just starting his slide when those two sandwiched him. In slow motion one could argue they didn’t need to make the hit but in real speed out there that was the blink of an eye decision. And they didn’t go for his head or neck at all. I hope Tommy gets healthy and comes back strong.

Confirmed, Tommy is out for this upcoming game.

Too bad. But in this one instance, the bubcats are actually correct: their backup IS better than their starter.
