Tinkle said his program has made some huge strides this spring during offseason conditioning workouts.

"We weren't happy with the way things went this year." he said. "Work ethic-wise. Our guys are just champing at the bit to work hard and provide some leadership and set the tone for all the new guys coming in."

"We thought we were a little deficient in our defense and toughness on the perimeter," Tinkle said. "Now I think we improved those areas."

It is reassuring to me that Tinks admitted that they weren't happy with last years outcome. I believe he is accurate when he addresses defensive toughness deficencies along with work-ethic and leadership needs. The only thing I would like to add to his assessment is shot selection. Often half the solution is accurately diagnosing the real problem.

so what is the point of a poll on your commentary? The assessment was rather obvious don't you think? :werd:

You may think the assessment is obvious. I may agree with whole-heartedly. However, I do realize that maybe someone else sees it differently. Unlike some on this board, I like to hear other views or opinions. Whether I agree with them or not, I invite other views than my own.

The back court has definitely been addressed. And that was an issue after last season. There was not enough spreading the ball around and too many turnovers as well.

However, how does this team expect to match up on an athletic 6'5" wing? Sacramento State is going to have a field day against this Griz defense.

Look for a lot of zone this year I guess. I don't see any other way that the Griz can match up on a solid squad.

Maybe Tinks considered walkon 6'7"Hurley who, (if is anything like his uncle Rob) could potentially match up well with the larger athletic guards when needed. New recruit Sean Watson is 6'5"reportedly with great defensive skills.

I certainly hope so. Defense was by no means a strong point for this team last year, and I myself don't see any improvements roster wise on the defensive end.

I hope to be proven wrong.

Tinkle has all the tools to win the league, it all comes down to whether he can put the whole package together on the court. I did not think the team had that much chemistry last year, if he can generate some chemistry and get the players to buy into him and his system it will be tough not to envision them finishing as high as second next to the Cats! :tounge:

Defense, toughness and work ethic.

A direct correlation to the coaches. If you can't get your players to play hard, hustle and defend, it's the coaches fault.

He did assess it correctly, but what changes will he make with his style? Motivational techniques are critical. Everything he says (in the locker room and press) has an impact on this.

For example, he stated in the paper Rundles will "pick where he wants to play". He should say, "rundles will play the position the team needs most"

Tinks has not demonstrated this knowledge in tact yet. Until he learns this, team chemistry will always be an issue.

Playing hard defense, hustle and work ethic are a direct reflection on the coaching staff. He needs to own up to this!!!

How did the Cats survive last year on their meager talent? They huslted, worked hard and played D. Nice coaching job there.

Great post. I am relieved that they finally admit that weren't happy with last years under-achieving results though.
