Griz hope ‘The Zoo' brings noise
By BOB MESEROLL Missoulian sports editor

Wayne Tinkle remembers “The Zoo.”

The Montana men's basketball coach hopes his players get a taste of what he enjoyed as a player when the Griz open the regular season Friday night against Colorado State.

The game is being promoted as “Turn back the clock” night. The student section will move back to the east bleachers for the first time since Dahlberg Arena was renovated in 1998-99. That's where the students sat when they were known as “The Zoo.”

“I hope everybody is just in a frenzy,” Tinkle said. “It would be nice to get as close to that Zoo atmosphere as we can. That gets the rest of the crowd into it. Maybe we can get some folks up out of their seats, making some noise. Hopefully our guys will perform well and make it a real positive start to what could be an exciting season.”

Tinkle played for the Griz from 1985-89, the tail end of The Zoo era. Attendance peaked in the late '70s and early '80s, but still averaged about 6,500 for Tinkle's career. He has some fond memories of the raucous fans.

During his redshirt season, Nevada-Reno came to Missoula for its conference game along with guard Curtis High, who had apparently been in a recent altercation.

“Just about the whole student section had bandages on their head and boxing gloves,” Tinkle said. “To me, that's when it first sunk in that wow, this is something.”

Late in Tinkle's career, Weber State brought star player Rico Washington to Dahlberg Arena.

“He was a pretty darn good player,” Tinkle said. “He and one of our forwards, Ossie Young, were kind of getting into it. I went to separate them and we were right in front of The Zoo. (Washington) went to say something and I told him, ‘Listen, you've got to stop right now or I'm going to throw you into the second row. Those are two of my football buddies and I don't think you'll make it out of there alive.'

“He turned and looked and smiled and said, ‘You're right.' ”

That kind of atmosphere could do nothing but help the Griz against CSU. The Rams, who are picked to finish last in the Mountain West Conference, nevertheless have some good young players along with a pair of 7-footers to patrol the paint.

Senior 7-footer Stuart Creason averaged 22 points in the Rams' two exhibition wins. Ronny Aguilar, a sophomore 7-footer, backs him up.

“We can't give those guys anything easy,” Tinkle said, “and hope that over 40 minutes we can wear on them a little bit.”

Freshman Andre McFarland, a 6-6 forward, averaged 17 points in the exhibitions and freshman guard Josh Simmons averaged 18.5.

“McFarland's a nice player, we recruited him out of high school,” Tinkle said. “He's very athletic, strong; has a great body. We know both he and Simmons will be on the attack. They really like to try to get to the rim and draw contact.”

The Rams shot 84 free throws in their exhibitions.

“They really put you on your heels and attack,” Tinkle said.

Coming off of two impressive exhibition wins, Tinkle said he's still a little apprehensive entering the season opener.

“There is a little bit of that anxiety,” Tinkle said. “We certainly feel comfortable at a few spots, but we have some young guys, too.”

That's where a raucous crowd could help.

“I know it would be thrilling for them,” Tinkle said of his players. “Matt Martin pulled me aside when he was a freshman and said, ‘Coach, I've heard stories of how this was when you played. A goal of mine is to have this place filled by the time I leave.' I think it would really mean a lot to have that atmosphere we see at so many other colleges with the students on the sideline. I know it would set the tone.”

NOTES: Montana center Andrew Strait enters his senior season with 1,219 career points, 11th on the all-time list. He needs just five points to catch No. 10 Daren Engellant (1988-92) and 16 to catch No. 9 Lou Rocheleau (1945-49).

That brought back so many memories for me. The crowd was ELECTRIC every game every second. I am so pulling for the students to pull this off with resounding success, and help the GRIZ pull off a W. :thumb:

I hope the students and all Griz fans show McFarland what he is missing in Missoula!!!

Go Griz!!!

Too bad the football team is on the road. It's not the "Zoo" without the biggest, baddest 75 UM students lining the front couple rows. I hope they get over themselves and start supporting the Hoops program again. Only Ryan Bagley and a couple others have been loyal hoops supporters in recent years.

I agree with that. The last time the Zoo was really nuts was when Scotty Gragg was in the front row intimidating the other team.

Well just by the postings, I can tell GrizBacker! is all hoped up and ready for tonights action.

Also, I haven't heard anyone say otherwise, but I am assuming the Press Row and the Jeff Ament seats will still be there, so the students won't really be right on the court, right? Or did they move that for tonight?

Damn straight!!! I hope the Griz hang one on them.

Sure wish I could be there to help bring some noise. I loved nothing better than being in the middle of the Zoo when Dahlberg was rocking. Tonight's the first step to getting that back.

Go Griz; Be Loud!

Since nothing has been mentioned about press row in the release by Jim O'Day, assume Press row will not be moved.

I sit right above the "new" student section now, so hopefully I will be able to help out a lot with the yelling. The students may need all the help they can get to get those seats back.

BAGS is great to the basketball team. I have seen him the run the court in summer scrimmages. Surprisingly enough BAGS holds his own on the hardwood too. Plays tough defense and rebounds well. Had he wanted to, he could have walked on and made it. I do agree though, how great would it be to have the likes of Balogh, Dow, and Quinn front and center?

Word from the game is that the new student section vastly improves the atmosphere.

Even though the game has been a blowout, I hear the game has been a pretty good time - mainly thanks to the students.

the students are what the game is for and they are who make it fun. We should never forget that, unfortunately about 10 years ago, that was lost in translation.

The Zoo not only filled the lower east seats. They were there early!
We had dinner and got to the Adams Center at 6:30 and they were already there, everybody in their Z-Tees. I had forgotten how much they bring to the evening. Don't wait Jim O. make accomodations to move east side ticket holders and resurrect the Zoo NOW! They were great.

After a tentative first half the Griz really picked up the tempo on both ends making thing tough particularly for Creason, CSU's 7 footer. There was some great 3 point shooting throughout, but 2nd half penetration in the paint by Hasquet, Strait, Sharp and the freshman Qvale really opened the flood gates. I thought the Rams began to look increasingly disorganized dealing with the Griz D.

Okay the students did their part. Please do it rest of the season regardless of where you sit. Now I have an idea for the season ticket holders, "BEAT what the STUDENTS did!" It is experimental and what you need to do to "KEEP" your seats. YES that mean standing, clapping, encouraging, yelling, etc!!!! Are you up to it? IF not, just give the damn seats up for the students.
