i never liked monty at montana. played a cupcake schedule, said he couldn't recruit black players to missoula (where stew morrill could and did) and never got us to the ncaa despite the luxury of having two of montana's greatest players ever, krysko and derrick pope. i spoke to him briefly before a game in stockton once, and asked him if he had any immediate plans to leave montana. "make me an offer," he replied, barely concealing his desire to get out missoula. and once gone, he never looked back.

that being said, monty created a legacy at stanford, and i'm happy to see tinkle reaching back to the glory days of montana basketball. remember, the first thing krysko did on being named head coach was to bring micheal ray back to campus. schools with great traditions in a sport are smart enough to nourish and enhance those traditions, and i'm glad we're making this effort.

i, for one, find myself getting back to basketball, not only for our tradition there, but because it's the sport where we get the chance to get out and play the bigger schools where you experience all of the agony but also the glory of nearly upsetting ucla or beating nevada. o'day seems content to play it safe with the football schedule, and i for one am getting bored with it. basketball can't start too soon for me.
