Throw the ball on 1st down

Maybe Brint could validate this for me, but after the 1st quarter, did we throw on first down at all?
Especially in the 2nd half, it sure felt like we got ourselves into run, run, pass. Many times we put TMac into 3rd and long and our young QB tried to do too much.
No doubt we paid the price for taking our foot off the gas pedal in the 2nd quarter. (and of course the turnovers).
Go Griz!

I'm glad somebody else noticed that we went to run for no gain, run for 2, 3rd and long in the second half too. With the exception of a few wild throws, in the 1st half Trent threw that beautiful pass to Harris to start the game, had some nice throws to Sam and the incomplete to Hardy was a nice ball too (the defender had a handful of Hardy's jersey slowing him up....not sure how the official didn't see it).

I thought we could have thrown more on 1st as the game went on. Looking at the stats, UM ran on 1st down 18 times and threw 11 times. On 2nd down, and I thought these stats were interesting, UM ran 8 times and threw 16 times.

McKinney was 9-10, as of early in the second quarter, with the only incompletion being the throw down field to Hardy. He looked terrific up until that point, having also had some nice runs.

I was a bit curious about this as well. In the 2nd half we started out with a throw on first down.. then we didn't throw it on first down again that half until we were down by 17 with 5 minutes left. Here's a summary of the play by play in the 2nd half. Our last "Drive" in the 1st half which could've been huge if we actually tried something with 2 mins left was run on 1st down only too:

Drive1 (24-14 at the start of the 3rd quarter):
1-10 (Incomplete Pass)
2-10 (Run + fumble, 2 plays, -2yds, TOP: 9 seconds)

Drive2 (24-21 with 13:03 left in the 3rd quarter):
1-10 (Run for -2yds)
2-10 (Completed pass for 1yd)
3-11 (Interception, 3 plays, -1yds, TOP: 1:18)

Drive3 (24-24 with 10:14 to go in the 3rd quarter:
1-10 (Run for 9yds)
2-1 (Completed pass for 8yds)
1-10 (Sack for -5yds)
2-15 (Incomplete Pass)
3-15 (Sacked for -1yd)
4-16 (Punt, 5 plays, 11yds, TOP: 1:45)

Drive4 (24-27 with 1:44 to go in the 3rd quarter:
1-10 (Run for 0yds)

No wonder the 2nd half felt that way to me...."all run on 1st down" since I was among the Slow arriving crowd that did not see the first Griz series. (pass and run/fumble)
Since that was the only pass on first down until the game was effectively put away by the Jacks, in retrospect, we certainly played real conservative with our play calling.
We will get much better, we are the Griz!
