Three University of Montana football players have been named to the Sports Network’s Football Championship Subdivision preseason All-America team, the organization announced Monday.

Offensive tackle Danny Kistler Jr. and linebacker Jordan Tripp were named to the first team, while defensive end Zack Wagenmann was named second team.

Montana was one of just five FCS programs with multiple first-team selections. Two-time defending national champion North Dakota State had an FCS-high three players recognized.

Kistler, a 6-foot-8, 315-pound senior from Seattle will be starting for the third straight season in 2013 and will serve as one of UM’s team captains this fall. Last year he started all 11 games at right tackle and was a first-team All-Big Sky Conference pick.

Following his junior season, Kistler was the co-recipient, along with senior guard Jake Hendrickson, of UM’s Paul Weskamp Award, which is given out annually to the team’s outstanding offensive lineman.

Tripp will become a rare four-year starter for the Grizzlies in the fall. The 6-3, 237-pound senior from Missoula was second on the team with 95 tackles a year ago and totaled a team-high 13.5 tackles for loss.

Last season, Tripp, a third-generation Griz football player, was named first-team All-Big Sky and to several All-America teams. He finished 10th in the balloting for the Buck Buchanan Award and is expected to be on the preseason watch list for the 2013 award, which will be announced July 11.

A 6-3, 250-pound junior defensive end, Wagenmann averaged 1.05 sacks per game last season to rank fourth in FCS. He started all 11 games and tied for sixth on the team with 50 tackles. He finished the season with 11.5 sacks.

A Missoula product, Wagenmann was named to three All-America teams last season: Associated Press (second team), Sports Network (third team) and Phil Steele Magazine (fourth team). He was also a first-team All-Big Sky Conference selection

To spice this thread up with some discussion:

Because Tripp, Wags, and Kistler were tabbed as preseason All-Americans, which Griz has the best shot at being an All-American outside these three? Justify your choice.

My bet: Brock Coyle. Kid led the team in total tackles (107) and solo tackles (35). Because Tripp is the quickest LB he tends to blitz more and get more sacks. If Coyle can get in the 4 region for sacks with 2-3 picks, he would definitely be in consideration.

I agree, but explain. The thing with Jordy, in our somewhat balanced offense, is that he doesn't put up crazy numbers, yet. And truthfully, I think we will be the best we can be if Jordy doesn't put up huge numbers. I think our O will rely on the run and leave room for only 200-250 yards passing per game.

Jordan Canada will suprise everyone this year...Look for his name on this list by seasons end!

I think Tyrone Holmes might have an outside chance of: All Big Sky and maybe second team All-American. I think he is going to empress along with Wags this year! Coyle will be right in the hunt also! I can't wait to see our' defensive front 7!! (Wags, Holmes, Bienemann, Crittenden, Coyle, Tripp, Kanongata'a, Kidder,Tonga Takai, Ginn) Bring Them Hell GRIZ!!

Coyle's a good pick. If Tripp and Coyle have great years, I could see both of them being drafted.

Do any of the other o-lineman have a chance? How good is Poehls?

I think if JJ can go another season like how he finished 2011, he'll be at least third team AA, and might challenge for the Payton. :thumb:

Poole.

why do people have to explain, or provide some sort of imperical data as to why they think Jordan Johnson or Jordan Canada, or whoever else has a chance to be an All-American-type player this coming season? It's called very talented players growing up, improving and progressing!! It's called logic. Is it written in stone that either of them will be named All-American at the end of 2013? No, of course not. But obviously, the potential is there and most can see it. There have been a A TON OF MONTANA GRIZZLIES who have earned 1-AA or FCS All-American over the years of this storied program. I would be willing to bet the list of junior and senior AA's far outweigh the list of Griz who earned AA as freshman and sophomores.

Empirically speaking.

Save it for another day.. You sound like my ol lady! Blah blah blah blah...

Pre-Season honors lists can be comical.

For instance, last pre-season most of the focus for the best WR in the nation was USC's Robert Woods. Well it turns out his teammate, Marquis (spelling?) Lee turned out to lead the nation in receptions and won the Belitnikof (spelling?) award for the nations best WR. Lee wasn't getting the pub. Pre-Season lists,.

I have been touting Poehls for a while. He blocks out the sun, and can be devastatingly good. I like him better than Kistler, but I realize Danny is getting most of the praise.
