The momentum.
UM plays well in the first half, leading 21-3 at half. Davis is very bothered by the crowd, getting multiple false starts, etc. Davis seems to be losing its cool later the first half, with mistakes and multiple late hit penalties. However, Davis has no turnovers, and ends the game with no turnovers.
What halftime adjustments should make, with UM up 21-3 and having held Davis to 113 yards of TO, is my recollection?
Davis gets kickoff to start the second half. UM forces a quick punt by Davis on its first drive. UM offense has 6 plays for 33 yards. Williams has nice 31 yard punt to the Davis 5, fair catch.
Davis has nice 12-play drive, but gets only a 41 yard FG at 7:22. Davis has false start and personal foul on drive, but Buss follows it up with a 15 yard personal foul. Davis starting to wake up, but UM holding and not falling apart.
UM drives 10-41, and at 4th and 1, UM goes for it and Lee doesn't get it, at 3:22. His only rush of the game. UM tries to do a quick play, but ref holds up play at ball, and then comes out going right through backfield. In retrospect, UM probably should have stopped the quick play at that point (no surprise left), and figured out a better play.
This was a huge momentum shift. Just huge.
Davis runs a trick receiver pass for 56 yards, by far its longest pass of the day. Davis scores 3 plays later, in 1:05 and at 2:17. I told my wife to watch out for Davis to come at us hard. The Davis confidence is now way up and they are ready to roll, even tho UM still up 21-13.
UM goes 3 and out. I think this is when UM went for a longer pass on first down, incomplete. Williams punt goes 38 and is fair caught. Would have been nice to have a big punt there.
At quarter, Davis is fired up. I commented to my wife that the Griz seemed not to have great excitement and confidence, as they gathered at the sidelines. They probably felt Davis picking up steam and now fully confident.
Davis goes 10 for 63, to tie the game. Makes 2-pt conversion. Davis is starting to take control of the game and clearly has the momentum.
Davis scores quickly in 3-82, on 56 yard run. Catches UM in a blitz from outside, and runner has big hole and only 1 person to beat in the secondary. Davis up 28-21 at 10:59 to go in game.
Sneed sacked on 3d down, and Davis recovers fumbles at UM 14. Sneed hit as he throws as backer gets around lineman quickly from Sneed's right as he looks left. Not Sneed's fault.
Davis scores quickly. 35-21. 9:13.
Sneed throws bad pick in flat on first play, after Calhoun false start. Davis scores quickly. 42-21.
Thought Humphrey should have gotten into the game at this point.
Davis had 11 penalties in first half, and 3 in the second half. UM had 5 for the game.
I felt sick for the team.
Congrats to Davis.
So, am I right in thinking that none of the naysayers are capable of commenting on this post?
Or, do they just want to think what they think, and ignore what happened?
Maybe I missed this, but did anyone but me comment on Sneed's run where he jumped over the defender at mid-field? Is his pick when UM was down 42-21 with 7 minutes to go more newsworthy, or more part of their agenda? The pick got mentioned a dozen or two times.
merry halloween, greenie:
regarding halftime adjustments, since things were going well, i think a coach would talk to the team about the adjustments uc davis might make, and how to respond. [I agree, but it would be hard to know what Davis would do. I tihink adjustments are already usually being made during the first half.]
surprise/catch them off guard moment on the 4th down play was eliminated by officials holding the ball, and the griz had a smaller, fresh off a long stay on the bench guy in at running back. would've been smarter to slow it down and run a play with more thought behind it at that point. [I completely agree, and said that too.]
not much to be done about the trick play. [I assume UM was in zone coverage, and the deep defender on that side must always keep the deepest receiver in front of him until he knows for sure it's a run. Big mistake by safety.]
regarding the start of the 4th quarter, about the only guy with a real chance to get the team more into it is the coach. call them together and try to get everyone to buy in to the idea that they will win. [I think it's a combination of the coach, the position coaches, and the team leaders. I don't know who was saying what, but I thought I saw lack of confidence in some of the team at that point,]
regarding the long run, perhaps better play calling by the defensive coordinator would have helped. [Perhaps, but UM blitzed backers from the edges, Davis may have anticipated this, and there was only one person to defend in the middle when Davis line opened up a nice hole. Tough play for the safety, but the play has to be made. Plays like that, whether a player makes them or not, are often what win or lose games. This didn't lose the game, but it was one of about 5 plays that the Griz lost in important parts of the second half. It was unlikely that UM was going to win at this point.]
regarding the sack/fumble, didn't sneed scramble some before? given the pressure uc davis was getting, maybe the griz should have had someone who can pass the ball the ball quickly as a qb? sneed seems to me "to take an extra second to aim" his passes, so has a slow release. presume the time taken to "aim" is because of poor accuracy when not doing so. [The blitzing backer came from the offensive right and was barely touched by the tackle. He was in fast, and Sneed didn't see him. Sneed was looking left. I had my eye on the blitzer from the beginning, because he was between my seat and the qb. I don't agree that Sneed holds the ball too long or has a slow release.]
calhoun false start on it's own was a little disheartening, because it was at a key moment, and calhoun had been a big plus on offense in the game. his presence certainly had made the offensive line look more like they aren't as bad as most of egriz, along with bobby (apparently) proclaims. i believe he had 16 rushes for 73 yards in his limited time playing. [I agree. And seniors can't make mistakes like in big games in critical moments, if the team is going to win.]
regarding changing qbs, that is always a tough question, and one would think the coach should know best. haven't seen evidence it was a good or bad move to keep sneed at qb. [Agreed.]
as for the uc davis penalties in the first half, i think at least a couple, and probably more, were at least in part due to them responding to what looked to me like cheap play by the griz, i.e. the leg twist and robby hauck's shoving a uc davis guy's face mask upwards after a play. [I couldn't see any of this from where I was sitting, across the field. You are probably correct.]
