The State of Griz Baskeball

Qvale dominated UCLA in Pauley, dominated Oregon state, played very well against UW in what should've been a win. Also played well in the tourney against New Mexico in what very well could've been a 1st round upset if not for AJ's atrocious night shooting. He made us competitive with basically the entire western half of the country.

Agreed. Qvale had some great games for us against teams from top conferences.
13pts, 10 rebounds 2 blocks @UCLA
27pts, 18 rebounds 5 blocks vs Oregon State
13pts, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks @Washington in that game we should have won.
15pts 10 rebounds 2 steals and a block @Oregon when we won down there.

In the game against New Mexico you also mentioned he was pretty much unstoppable inside. Ended up with 26 points on 12-16 shooting, had 13 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. The rest of the team combined shot 10-38 unfortunately :(

I don't get to see many Griz games in person, but as it happens, I saw several involving Qvale: The game at Pauley (with a Tarheel fan); at Oregon (with my nephew, an Oregon student); and at San Jose against New Mexico (with an old girlfriend from Albuquerque.) That last game was most upsetting. We put on a spirited run at the end, and could have won it on a last shot. I was hoping we'd call time and set up Qvale, who'd just been killing New Mexico inside, but instead a young (freshman) Will Cherry made a madcap drive to the bucket and threw up an improbable shot that lost us the game. In all three of those games, Qvale was far and away the best center on the court. I watched the Washington game on TV, and they absolutely homered us. Qvale was the best center there as well.

Of course, Qvale's freshman year was a foul-plagued, injury-ridden waste of a year. Again, I saw him in person as a freshman at Pacific. As a young player, he tried to block every shot, quickly running up the foul count and getting an early seat on the bench. Then he got hurt. Another reason I'm so happy with DeCuire: A sane redshirt policy. Qvale--as with most big men--needed extra time to develop. A fifth year for him would have been special.

Since Brian Qvale is a major focus of this thread, I thought a brief update might be appropriate. Currently, Brian is having an outstanding season as the starting center for the EWE Baskets Oldenburg team in the EuroBaskets Pro basketball Assn. He's the second leading scorer with a 13.6 ppg., and averages 7 rbds. and 1.5 assists for Oldenburg, currently in first place in Group I (4-1 group record), with a 14-6 overall record. BQ and Will Cherry faced off in late November when Oldenburg beat Cherry's Alba Berlin team 79-76. Cherry scored 22 pts. in that game while BQ scored 12. Oldenburg is in pretty good position to advance in the Euroleague playoffs (not so for Alba).

I spoke briefly with BQ last July when he was weighing an offer from Oldenburg, and an invite to attend the Charlotte Hornets pre-season tryouts. He said he loved playing in the Euroleague for a variety of reasons. Brian's on Facebook, where he posts photos from game competition (some nice action shots!).

At this point in the season I am persuaded that we will not win the NCAA tournament. Other than that, I'm happy.
