The Small Difference Between Grizzlies of Years' Past

I've been a Griz fan since I went to my first game in 1993. As the so-called decade of dominance took shape, I couldn't help but notice a common theme recently. The Griz somehow always found a way to win the close games, especially early in the season. Check this out.

2008
9/6 @ Cal Poly 30-28 W
9/20 UC Davis 29-24 W
9/27 Central Washington 38-35 W

2009
9/12 @ UC Davis 17-10 W
9/26 @ NAU 41-34 W

2010
9/25 Sac State 28-25 W

2011
9/17 EWU 17-14 W

In the past 4 years, there have been 7 games decided by 7 points or less in SEPTEMBER that the Griz have managed to win. Late in games we have folded this year. Call it coaching, call it inexperience, but there is that special something missing from this year's team.

Past Griz teams recover that muffed punt return against NAU (S. Murray) and find a way to win. They kill the clock after the fumble or recover the onside kick yesterday. They make that extra point in Boone. It's little things, but those little things have cost us a legitimate shot at being 5-0 while we sit at 2-3.

I've been less frustrated by the overall performance of this team than from some Griz teams that may have even been undefeated at this point in the season. I know we have the talent to turn this season around, but we need to find some of that special something which has been missing this year.

Thoughts?

Aaah.... the good ole' days.....

I remember all the arguments on here on whether our close win was a "Good" thing or a "Bad" thing....

Now we try to find silver linings in the losses..... :(
Hope we can turn this ship around before it takes on too much water.

I've been watching and following the Griz just a couple seasons longer than you (1991). I agree with you post, does seem like a little something is missing, killer instinct maybe? This season feels a lot like 2010 actually. Still hoping for a turn around, beating the Cats and making the playoffs. Go Griz!

I agree with the first post. Besides the intangible of the will and confidence to find a way to win despite adversity, two things missing are the overall (lack of) experience of the team (due to graduation) and the expected starting qb. Note that this team has shown that it can come back. It just hasn't been able to finish, due mostly to the large amount of mistakes. When was the last time UM started a frosh qb in the first 5 games of a season?

Youth and inexperience account for just about everything that is going wrong with us this year. When someone lets off a bomb inside of your program and coaches, A.D.'s and players all get caught up in its blast it leaves your team young and inexpereinced. Unfortunately for this year that means mistakes are happening and more are coming. The silver lining is that in future years this means more experienced players that took their lumps this year. There is still a chance at the playoffs and I think that is a great goal, but after the off-season we had, no one should be jumping off of bridges, a child could have written this storyline.
