The Refs Sucked in the Griz/Cat Men's Game

All 3 of the refs in the men's game, especially the 2 white guys, were horrible. Numerous bad and missed calls. The crowd, particularly some near the court, rode them and booed them. The Griz would have blown out the Cats had the refs not make so many bad or questionable calls, especially about halfway through the second half. One ref managed a big smile with about 2 minutes to play (when it was clear the Griz would win), when someone yelled: "Okay, now we can buy you a beer. See you at the Mo Club."

Great game by the Griz. While Johnson had a great game, both in scoring, taking care of the ball and rebounding, it was a team effort. Hasquett had 17 quiet points, but only 1 rebound. Taylor played very well in 26 minutes, altho missed all 3 of his 3-pointers. He took care of the ball, had 7 rebounds, and make smart plays. Sharp played well. Staudacher was off on his shooting, but played some good defense. McGillis had a number of terrific hustle plays and played aggressive defense. Got screwed on several fouls, including his 4th on a drive to the hoop early in the second half. He didn't play the rest of the game. Banny played fairly well in 12 minutes, with some rebounds, 2-2 shooting, including a 3, and some other good hustle plays. Selvig had some good plays and hit a nice 3 pointer, in limited time. Qvale didn't play in the second half. Stockton didn't play.

This was a hard fought game, especially for the first 30 minutes. The Griz defended well. The Griz gave up too many offensive rebounds, but MSU was usually not able to convert those into points. The Griz shot their free throws very well (25-30), in part because Johnson made so many (15-16). The Cats were awful on their freethrows (17-34). Just terrible. Don't know what would have caused that. On the season, they are now 67.6%. Howard is 47.9%, after going 1-7 tonight. Both teams were 4-13 from 3 point range.

Whether or not the refs sucked, I liked how the guys didn't let some questionable calls get to them. When AJ rolled over the one MSU player in the second half and the guy swung at him to get him off, the refs obviously made the wrong call by calling a intentional foul on AJ instead of ejecting the MSU player for throwing a punch. Nevertheless, AJ didn't let it get to him and bother him (other than a minimal disgusted face) which was a really good sign to me. Being able to control emotions should be very important down the road...

AJ gave him a forearm shiver which caused the guy to throw him off with a feable attempt at a punch. I laughed when the crowd booed at that.

I don't know why we have to rag on the refs all the time. It seems like after every game there is a post complaining about the refs. Face it, the refs in the BSC are horrible. I think it is bigger news when there is good reffing on either the basketball court or football field. Ho hum!

As for refereeing, every team I coach I tell them to take care of business, and not put the team in position to have the refs determine the game one way or the other. It is not too effective when coaching 6th grade and younger. However, at the Jr High level on they tend to respond and understand what you mean as a coach.

A few years back my team got the short end of 1st half officiating. As I was about to mention the officiating, my PG piped up for me. He said, "We need to quit bitching about the refs, and go out the court the 2nd half and take care of business!!!!!!!" The 2nd half we outscore our opponent by over 20. We win going away easily. They not one time complained about the officiating in the 2nd half. That was one time I knew I had players that actually understood what I was telling them since the beginning of the year.

That same PG now tells his HS teammates that before every game. BTW, so does my BIG that is playing varsity as a sophomore in AA ball.

Absolutely good point! However, in close games it sucks to have horrible officiating. My beef with last night's game was the fact that there were rididculously petty calls where there was little or no foul. You combine this with the physicality of games against Duke and UW. How are kids suppposed to be able to adjust to how referrees officiate? I think the referrees should adjust to teams. And in last nights game there were unnecessary calls.

Good thing is that we did not have to worry about it last night.

Some longtime Griz fans around me said it was the worst ref performance they had ever seen at the Adams Center.

I find it amusing that bigtyme asks why we rag on the refs all the time, and then he starts discussing the refereeing, including commenting on the bad calls. Bigtyme, the refs were especially bad last night. If you couldn't see that, then I say that's more of a comment on you. If you don't want to discuss the refs, then I suggest that you find another thread to post in.

Maybe some of your longtime Griz fans are the ones guilty of not filling in seats during regular games throughout the past several years. The reffing was not any worse than it normally is, point blank. If you read my original post I said the BSC refs are horrible and we face this issue after every game. That does not dismiss my ability to point out my observations from last night relative to games against the likes of Duke and UW. I also pointed out the missed forearm shiver that AJ gave the MSU player that the crowd was pathetically booing over.
I did not say I did not want to discuss the refs, I just feel it is more appropriate to discuss when there is news that is not of a regular occurrence.

There was a guy sitting in the first row of reserved seats behind the courtside seats across from the Griz bench that seemed like he thought he should be a referee. He was wearing a white t-shirt, probably 50 something years old, dark hair with a little gray in it and screaming like an idiot every time there was a call against the Griz. He's usually my favorite attraction in the crowd to watch for laughs. The funny thing is somebody told me that he's a fairly well known lawyer!

For some reason I get a kick out of the professionals that completely lose it and think it's ok to scream at the refs like a drunken college kid. Grow up! There's no way you're helping the cause and IMHO if I was reffing it would make me wanna screw your team over even more.

Was he wearing a Dartmouth shirt?

Haha funny this is mentioned. I was at the game last night and yes I agree the officiating was sub-par. And an even funnier note, is that I sat next to the African American ref from the game last night at the airport this morning.

We also had a loud mouth guy sitting next to us who thought he know all there was to know about basketball and officiating.

Shaky 1st half, good to see the team lock down in the 2nd.

I like all of the talent on this team but right now the two guys that are just playing their hearts out are AJ and Sharpie. Also the contributions from guys like Taylor and Selvig helped a lot coming off the bench. If the Griz play like they did in the 2nd half through conference play they could become a good team, hopefully they can continue this.

I sure hope Explosive isn't the person I think he is. Say he's a Griz athlete, and calling Griz athletes druggies, sellers and rotten apples on a message board. Whoever he is, I can see why some football have clobbered him (according to what he posted previously). Discussing himself on the board. Too funny.
