The Reality of GRIZ Basketball ..........

In a few years, Tres Tinkle will be the last of the Tinkle kids to graduate, and likely be the time for Wayne to consider job offers at more prominent programs, with a huge pay raise. It would take an awfully good opportunity for him to leave his GRIZ family, and where his family considers home. Like it or not, that is the reality GRIZNATION will be facing come spring of 2015.

By that time Wayne will be considered the best men's coach in GRIZ history, too many. His name will be a hotter commodity for some higher profile programs, which will throw a lot of money at him. With that said, I honestly believe Wayne believes he can make the GRIZ prominent on a national level, and there is a lot more to him than money. He bleeds more GRIZ blood than any GRIZ coach, and Missoula is home for his family. I have said it before, and saying it again, "He is the epitome of what a GRIZ coach should be, and the man I want representing GRIZ Basketball, and athletics for a few decades."

Hard to believe the criticism heaped on Wayne before he coached his 1st game. He has learned the job well, on the fly, and has turned out to be one hell of a coach, and even won over quite a few of his detractors here. He has become a complete coach, that will be successful anywhere he coaches. I feel he would be the one coach worth ponying up enough money to keep him here, as long as he wants to be here. What would it take to keep him here, to be the face of GRIZ Basketball for another 15 plus years?

I believe he can take the GRIZ basketball to even higher levels, and he wants to do just that. He is well respected from the midwest to the pacific coast, and getting more appeal to recruits. I know HS coaches and AAU coaches who think Wayne is the most personable and caring coaching they have met, and have no problems encouraging recruits to the GRIZ. He competes for talent that in the past no coaches dared to even pursue to Montana.

GRIZNATION, we need to start preparing for the day to do whatever is necessary and realistic to keep him at Montana. It starts with us die hard GRIZ hoops fans, then GRIZ fans, then the general public. IT starts with showing up to support his teams, and bringing your friends and acquaintances with you. We need to show him, his program is appreciated and respected. What kind of financial backing can we start to keep him here? For those of you not behind him yet, please take the time to get know the man, personally and professionally. Watch how much he is respected by his players. Listen, and see how he, and his staff interact at GRIZ cage camps, even go to a coaching clinic he has.

If, he should depart to another job in a few years. Who would you like to see take over? Of the current staff, I would like to see Freddy Owens be the man.

What is GRIZNATION willing to do keep Wayne here? What can we do collectively to show him we want him here for as long as Robin Selvig? Can we get behind keeping Wayne Tinkle here? What do you say GRIZNATION?

When he first took the job, I didn't think he had what it took. For those first couple years he was too much of a buddy on the court, but he's turned into a great coach. And just talk to any of the players. It's obvious how much they respect him.

Keep up the good work Wayne !

Great post! :thumb: I can tell ya i try and bring new people every game, and bring my best football voice! I hope there is a way we can keep tinks...it seemed like in the interview after the USD game he was disappointed with the crowd turn out. Hopefully we can get that fixed here in the next few weeks

wonderful post, grizrule. i'm with ya on this.

seems to me montanans consistely sell themselves and their state short. whenever i return, i'm reminded what an incomparably beautiful place it is, and what friendly generous people inhabit it. and when i met a black former griz player at an airport a few years ago, he raved about his experiences there, and the education he got. i know i'm not alone among ex-montanans who think the state is god's not-so-little acre, feel a lifelong emotional bond with it and are constantly drawn back as if by a magic magnetic mountain force. in the deepest and most satisfying part of your soul, there is always montana.

yet the prevailing attitude among its people seems to be a litany of aw shucks, heck, we're not as big, we're not as rich, we're not as good, our kids can't compete (which is what they said about moving up to the wac) and of course, tinkle's great but we'll never be able to keep him. a curious resignation to a fate not nearly as dire as they think, but that alcohol and suicide rates confirm. go figure.

and then you come along and say, hey! let's try! let's get together and see what we can do!

i'm all for it. if i feel that way about montana, you can imagine how the tinkles must feel about it, where lisa grew up, where she and wayne starred as athletes, where they met, married, raised their family. every time i've been near tinkle (and that's not often) he impresses me as a happy fulfilled guy. what money can't buy.

but let's try. let's start a fund. i'll chip in. no question, college athletics has become big business, with cheap labor. you're looking at a dizzying succession of slick slighly ethical vagabond coaches, eager to step up to the next level and cash in their ticket. if we've got a guy who doesn't quite fit that mold, we should do everything we can to keep him.

All great posts above. The reality is that Montana is a lower mid major program. Beautiful place to live and raise a family but most coaches want to coach at the highest level to see how you stack up. Montana just lost by 25 to BYU and a loss to CSU. I see Tinks wanting to challenge himself and will get the chance to do so at another school. Montana is a good school to start a career, however, in todays landscape that is all it will be in the Big Sky

Come on, Ci-tay. You know it is not just about the money. Coaches worth a flip want the challenge to coach at the highest level possible. Unfortunately, UM is not it!
