Right now there is a very weird, slow motion, recruiting battle between the Griz and the Cats over Hellgate's Jack McGillis In talking with a recruiter recently, though , the next big recruiting battle could be Derek Selvig a 6-8 forward/Center from Glendive. Derek is the son of former Griz basketball player, Doug Selvig and nephew of current Griz women's coach Robin Selvig.
Derek has been injured most of the year and does not have gody numbers that one might expect from a major basketball prospect this year, but I am told he is the best sophmore prospect in the State, ahead of Bobby Howard from Great Fall , who lead his AA team in scoring and rebounding, and 6-8 Jeff Edwards of Butte who earlier this week out played McGillis. Still I am told when all is said done he could be a Pac-10 recruit if he developes to his potential.
2006-07 could be one of the best year for Montana basketball recruits in a long time. If it comes down to the Cats and Griz for athletes, Derek as mentioned before has strong connection to the Griz family. Edwards I heard is related some how to ex-Griz Bob Olson, and Howard's Mom is an ex-all-conference player for the Cats in the early 80's.
